The P4 Drivers Guild Great Western Branch held their annual Rally on Sunday 12th July at Longbridge Deverill, in Wiltshire, at 'The George' Public House. The Wessex Group of the P5's were invited to attend, and in the end we had four cars on show. Uniquely one of each type. We had hoped for more but some were off road being readied for other shows . The venue was very good as it was in a field next to the pub which served excellent food all day and of course local ales. For those who wanted to make it a long weekend they also have overnight accommodation.
Evidently its a popular venue for classics of all types and I am informed they don't charge for the use of the field, but don't quote me as I only heard it secondhand.
One of the group won a shield for the best P5 on show, and it was ironic that the chairman of the P4 Guild also presented a shield to the same person at the National at Kelmarsh Hall four years ago with his 'Humber Supersnipe' which he remembered well.
The Rover 14 won the best other Rover award and had disappeared when the awards were presented. Evidently he was down on holiday and called in to the pub for lunch and was asked to join us. It certainly was a superb car but I don't think the black over brown paint was correct, more likely it would have been black over maroon. When he went off the engine sounded more like a V8 than anything else.
I must say that our 4 cars were well presented and looked the part, and they were certainly well received by the P4 owners and the public.
There was one 'French' registered P4 there and in conversation with the owner he had a P5 saloon back home which he was restoring as he liked them so much.
