One of the real benefits of this forum is that I can see what all the hidden areas of my car look like, without actually removing anything. Miguel, that mysterious perforated steel strip looks to me like the adjustable hanging strap for the rear of an old after-market car radio. i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii77/miguelp5b/L1130150.jpgRadios sold as accessories intended to fit in any car were supported at the front by the shafts of their volume and tuning knobs. The radio was hung from a steel strip like this attached to a small threaded stud on the rear of the radio. The top end of the strip was screwed, bolted, or rivetted by the installer to anything that was available under the dash. The strip was cut or bent to suit the installation and all the holes gave a large range of adjustment. Someone has probably decided to cut away the parcel shelf to make access easier for installing a radio. I wish I was making progress as fast as you are.
Hi Miguel, as my P5B Coupe from '71 is also rather corroded in the passenger compartment i have one question. Is that rust too, under the parcel shelf? Even my glove box is rusty. Not more than surface, but heavily covered with 'sandy' rust. Seems that is common with P5, where many underdash part are not painted or sealed at all, i guess .... Regards Mark

Most of this sort of corrosion is due dampness possibly caused by leaking window seals or corrosion under the seal somewhere Miguel the i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii77/miguelp5b/L1130134.jpg there are one of these arround each of the metal bits that stick out under the rear seat The seats look good Miguel just need a clean and possible re-colour? that parcel shelf seems a bit strange

Mark, fortunatelly i havent found any rust. Portugal is a very dry country and the car was stored in a garage. No problems with that. The parcel shelf does look strange. Why in hell they did it? Not for the radio. I know that because my Dad put it and he would not do something like that, and there was no need to do it to install the radio (wich by the way is probably going off). John, how hard is to remove the parcel shelf? This things grow on me, and now I only think in assembling a "new" one. Is the shelf the same for LHD and for RHD? Miguel

I think it is spot welded in place Miguel may be I have it wrong! I would "think" they only have one type for LH/RH cant find it in the parts book? may be worth only replacing the missing bit if you have a good welder

Hi, Looking closer to the seats,... they are not ALL leather, are they? I found some vinyl also. Since they are so dirty I didnt noticed that. Can the vinyl be washed? Can someone give me a round up vinyl places in the car. Dont want to waist money on expensive leather cleanner in vinyl. I must say, and this hurts my soul, that I´m a little dissapointed... Miguel

Correct - it was the poor man's Rolls Royce! . The only leather is the seat facings ie cushion and backrest and console "top" everything else is knit back vynil (highest quality though) Rolls Royce had leather everywhere apart from the headliner which was West of England cloth. javascript:add("%20:(") The Rovers learther was the same quality as a Rolls/Bentley though. You can get proper vynil cleaner but for stubborn stains cellulose thinners cannot be surpassed. Do not leave it soaking as it will eventually soften and dissolve it! Beware of fumes/flammability

Miguel,
The best vinyl cleaner for cars that I've ever used, and has been available for 40 years or more, is Dissol in a pink bottle. However, I have no idea if it is an Australian product or a global one.
However, it is hard to go past a good quality aerosol foam vinyl cleaner from any car accessory shop. They often have a cap with brush bristles built in. The foam seems to penetrate the grime and hold the solvent against the surfaces, even when vertical, and allow soaking time. You then scrub it gently with a soft brush (like a fingernail brush) then wipe it off with a damp cloth.
Phil, you make my hair stand on end every time you mention using thinners on vinyl. I guess you've had success with it, but a failed attempt would be disastrous.

Hi Miguel, try shaving foam as well in a first instance. It works out good on wrinkled vinyl with a micorfibre cloth. Let it soak before. Regards Mark

Thanks for the tips. Glenn R this is for you. I´ve been reading your web site about recolouring. They are great. I´ve also purchase liquid leather conditioner and cleaner. Not the colouring kit. First question: Did you clean the vinyl with another product and did you paint all (leather and vinyl)? Doors and doors armrests and posts trimings? Its vinyl? What did you do with these? I´ve dismantle the front seats and now its much easier to deal at one at a time. Like this my wife wont kill me when the dinning room table is occupied by the seats... I left some small space for the family also... Miguel

If the vynil is badly stained/dirty then you have nothing to lose if nothing else works - it has always worked for me although its not something that should be done regularly

For cleaning vinyl try a teaspoon of washing soda to half a pint of water. Apply with sponge, wipe off with a damp cloth. For leather & vinyl cleaner & conditioner add half a pint of olive oil, half an ounce of castile soap and 3 drops of grapefruit seed extract to a pint of water. Stir thoroughly and add water to make a total mix of three pints. Shake well before each use.

The vynil visors show signs of nicotine staining which can never be removed - is it a smoker!?

Yes, my Dad was a smoker. Heavy smoker. But the Rover was not his everyday car, so former owners probably were smokers also. I´m a smoker, but here and now I do solemnly swear, that I´ll never do it inside the car.

What's the function of the grapefruit seed extract?
As a preservative, I think, Warwick. It has anti-fungal properties.

Can see it now. Looks good. Maybe its the camera but a little too shiny. I have dismantled the parcel shelf the other day and realized the excellent job that someone did to it: Here was the sttering columm hole for RHD. I suppose the bolt holes were for that: The mounting rail was cut in three: and the shelf trim not standard Found out also that the steering wheel is broken (I suppose that there is no repair?) One pull out button in the parcel shelf that dont know what is for: Finnaly a before and after (without recolouring): Just learned how to post photos (not links), so I hope they fit. Miguel

That's a strange way to butcher a parcel shelf Miguel no idea why! Looks like you will need a bit of stitching done on the seams should be no problem in Portugal
