I´m having problems with dismantling the alternator, in the part of removing the rotor shaft from the drive end bracket. I followed the WM, and that says that after removing the woodruff key and bearing collar (easy), we must press out the rotor shaft. well that final part has been impossible. I dont want to hammer it down without any advice. Am I missing something? Miguel

The shaft is on a ball race bearing Miguel and is a tight fit it's a case of once you have removed the screws/key holding it all together holding the front cover and tapping the shaft through leave the nut on try a copper hammer you may be lucky and it may take a little effort don't go hiting it with a heavy hammer as the thread will suffer it may be advisable to soak in WD40 for a while and try again

A press is far better than using a hammer. I very rarely bother reconditoning dynamo', startersor alternators these days as there is a firm close by that has all tye equipment to do these properly including rewinding and lacquering

I have taken 2 to pieces to make 1 and both came apart without a press Phil, as long as you dont go at it like "a dog at broth" as us Geordies say it will come apart and don't as I said attack it to hard and ruin the nut/thread! The bearings are readily available from most bearing companies

Thanks. Beeing an impatient guy, I did remove the shaft from the bearing... and also damaged the thread. Like you say, John, "a dog at broth" (whatever that means). Now I´ll take the rotor to be re-thread. What upsets me most, is that if I had just thought a little I could see this coming...aaarrrggghhh. Living and learning. Thanks Miguel

it's OK for retired person ;Ds - I sometimes need a quicker option! One day Now Phil old boy "Early Retired" is the correct terminology still got a few years to go "Dog at Broth" means Miguel getting stuck regardless of the consequences to get the job done This reminds me of the Old Bull and the Young Bull joke

Everybody makes mistakes Miguel that's how we learn "A man who never made a mistake never made anything" was a favorite saying of my Grandfather
