I thought I might follow Enigma's lead and just post something completely random and see where it goes.
As a Range Rover owner of many many years, I was horrified a few years ago to discover that my beloved 505 Pug had some Lucas diesel parts on it. But I later learnt that they were really CAV components so the anguish subsided.
It did return again however when the Lucas pump on the 406 packed it in, but johnwp5bcoupe came to the rescue and all was well again.
Anyway, back to the present day and news of General Motors looking shakier by the day and a similar situation for its former parts division, now called Delphi, the present owner of Lucas Diesel.
This prompted me to do a quick search to see when Lucas bought CAV and what has happened to Lucas in more recent years. They acquired CAV much earlier than I thought.
What a mess!
1872 - Joseph Lucas & Son founded to make ships' lamps & later acetylene & oil lamps for bicycles.
1902 - Joseph dies of typhoid, aged 48, after drinking contaminated water in Naples.
1926 - Lucas buys CAV.
1931 - CAV division forms a UK joint-venture with Bosch to make diesel injection pumps.
1937 - CAV-Bosch buys out Bosch share in joint-venture to become CAV Ltd.
1978 - CAV changes name to Lucas CAV.
1986 - The remains of Massey-Ferguson becomes Varity Corp.
1990 - Michelin buys B.F. Goodrich.
1991 - Varity moves from Canada to the US.
1994 - Varity sells MF tractors and farm equipment to AGCO
1996 - Varity merges with Lucas Industries with HQ in UK.
1998 - LucasVarity attempts to move to the US, but stopped by shareholder vote.
1998 - LucasVarity in difficulty and sells Perkins engine division to Caterpillar.
1999 - LucasVarity taken over by TRW of US.
1999 - GM floats off parts division (AC Delco, etc.) as Delphi.
2000 - TRW sells Lucas Diesel to Delphi and Lucas Aerospace to Goodrich.
2000 - TRW bought by Northrup Gruman.
2000 - Northrup sells remaining automotive assest of Lucas, Varity & TRW to Blackstone private equity.
2005 - Delphi in bankrupcy court.
2008 - Still pending but not looking good.
Does this mean that the Italians are to blame for British automotive electrics not advancing beyond 1902 for so long?
By the way, it is widely understood in Australia that you lot drink warm beer because you have Lucas fridges.
