Hello,
i'm trying to fit a new ballast coil to my car that comes with a resistor.
I'm a bit unsure of how to wire it up but I have connected the positove lead to the negative terminal of the coil, the negative lead to the positive terminal of the resistor and the black wire from the resistor to the coil, positive terminal.
Is this right?
cheers, Fortnum

Standard or Thiefproof? the following is standard:-
The resistor is none polarity it goes between the +ve feed from the ignition the White wire, the other side White and Purple goes to the starter contact and the coil +ve, the -ve on the coil White and Black goes to the contact breaker.

cheers, problem i'm having is what was on there seems to be some kind of bodge. I don't think it is a ballast coil because the resistor next to it is not connected to it.
and i can't tell for sure what type of coil it is because the part code had rubbed off. It is a unipart coil fitted in 2000, that's all i can tell.
So can i fit my new ballast coil or will that not work?
thanks
(the original problem is it won't start and i know it's not a petrol issue, have tested that, it's not getting a spark. I've replaced the condenser, that didn't work, so I presume it must be the coil)

You need to trace the wiring - the ballast (or as you say resister) has to be bypassed or shunted when starter motor is operated so as to give the full 12v. The starter motor solenoid cap has to have an extra terminal to do this some do not hav ethis. The White ignition feed goes to the ballast termonal and then to the + terminal on the coil thus supplying it with 6, 8 or 9 volts depending on make. This will work without the shunt wiring but it will operate 100% l at the lower voltage thus defeating the object. These engines just do not need a starting ballast anyway just a decent Sports coil with standard CB set-up providing the engine, battery starter motor and wiring is OK as it sound like its not! Did you try hotwiring direct to feed old coil? gnition switches of both types will be failing by now if original fit. It is easy to mix up the wiring on the former type as well. Someone has probably fitted a 12v coil the simple way to explain is :- 12v coil +ve to the ignition -ve to the CB that will do to start it! or use the resistor and coil you have just fit the resistor in the +ve feed dont use the coil you have without the resistor Good Luck

"Contact Breaker" in other words the points. Sorry I mentioned "contact breaker" in my previous post so I thought you may have realised.
