Having spent the "summer" doing a few jobs ( including welding up the driver's front jacking point and sill end ) for it's first post purchase MOT, I set about checking the lights over the day before the test.
All were fine except the passengers side headlight which wasn't working when I bought the car. ( The fog lights keep blowing fuses so I gave up on them for now, in the hope Mr MOT won't worry about them ). Having removed and tested the headlight sealed beam unit one of the filaments had blown. I replaced the unit and all was well. For a few hours. On taking it for a test run a fill up and a wash, the new bulb gradually dimmed away until nothing and then both headlights died. Also, I can press the flasher switch as much as I like and main beam doesn't come on but the little blue light stays on all the time. I assume that the circuit was ok on one light but overloaded ( maybe the flasher switch as I had left them on full beam for a while ) when I replaced the failed unit. Does this sound sensible, or any other suggestions?
I've read the postings about fitting relays to the lights and the weakness of the dash switches, so when I look into the problem properly I intend to fit relays to both the headlights and the fog lights. But the question is if this was an overload on the switch does this mean that my switches are all fried now? Will I need to buy new ones?
Thanks for any suggestions as to the problem and advice on the switches.
