Ok, had my P5B three weeks and the auto box seems to have worn out... At least drive doesn't engage from cold. After 20 mins driving around in 2nd, it begins to engage ok. It just feels like it slipping or not biting at all. The auto fluid is a bit low but I'm not sure how much to put in... I emotied in a whole bottle the other day and it still reads low after being driven about or made 'hot' if you like. It had an overhaul in 2001 according to the invoices that came with it. So if it's packed up again, does anyone know a good mechanic for this sort of thing in south London?? Many thanks, Chris

Auto box level needs to be checked when engine and gearbox have warmed through after a run of about 5 to 10 miles, then when stationary and 'box in P and with the engine idling, check and re-check the oil level on the gearbox dipstick. You may need to check it several times until you can clearly be sure as to where the oil level is on the dipstick.
With clean oil it is quite hard to see exactly where the oil level is!!
Cheers

Terminal damage may have been caused by running low on oil for nay distance/speed - what colour is it and how does it smell - (from what is left in it).
It may need the oil changing if topping up cures it. Make sure you use the correct type which should be non-dexron (Ford) but later rebuilds may require the use of Dexron (GM)

Hi Phil,
well I topped it up the day after i bought it to a decent level on the dip... I know that the previuos owner was hardly using it so I'm not sure it's been run for a long time on low fluid.
Also, the fluid you say to put in it... I've been using Catsrol power steering fluid. Is this ok??

Thats the problem - it depends how the box has been reconditioned as to the type of oil used.
Use SEARCH set for 500 days and make your own mind up. I would only use a fluid that was designed for autoboxes anyway but the wrong fluid is unlikely to cause your problems if its not been used much. There must be a serious leak somewhere

I agree actually seeing a level on the dipstick can be difficult. I have a procedure which I have always found to work. Firstly get the box up to normal working temperature. Then on level ground run thru the whole range, waiting momentarily for each to engage going from from park thru the range and back again. with the car running in park, walk round remove and wipe the dipstick then refit and check the level. If you need to add fluid, run thru the range again before re checking. Rubbing a little chalk on the bottom of the stick where you take the reading, and wiping it off, dries the stick and makes it easier to see the level. I can put you in touch with someone to do the box, but he's in Essex. If that's of use send me a private message.
