Having removed the heater box to have the matrix overhauled, I decided to remove the two panles with the fuse box and heater blower motor housed on them.
I managed, somewhat carelessly to break the fuse box in two! This is the replacement fuse box that I refurbished and I put in last year.
I have trawled the net and can't find anything similar. Anyone know where I can get a direct replacement or offer an alternative that will improve connectivity without a major rewire?
Thanks in advance.

I have sent you pm but beware secondhand ones as they often have micro-cracks and/or loose terminals. Nasty wiring fires will ensue. NOS I have never seen even on P6 sites which also use them.
A modern 12 way boxfor Balde fuses is the ultimate answer but will not be engraved or a direct swap as these do dot have dual terminals so Lucar doubles have to fitted

Had a reply from Jonathan Wadham - who said : 'Hard to find uncracked, VG £45, usable with feint cracks, but still solid £25 + VAT' Second hand ones in my experience have loose terminals and when you try and secure them the platic can crack (If that's not already the cause of the loose terminals). I'm looking at having a few machined from blocks of nylon. Anyone else intrested?

But how can one prevent the box from cracking or detoriating ? What type of plastic is that ? Some early ABS or Bakelite ? I have read that silicone oil can be bad for plastic gear e.g. So we have to careful what to use. Merry X-Mas Mark

Mark I would think that the material is based on 'Bakelite' which hardens and goes brittle in time. Back in the sixties and seventies this type of electrical material was 'Phenolic' and was always coloured black.
Silicone oil is a killer for plastic gearwheels, and this was discovered in the modelrailway industry many years ago. The one oil that everyone uses is 3inOne and that is the worst oil of all. If you have small plastic gear wheels or the like then if you have to lubricate them make sure you use Sewing Machine oil.

You would have got a one looking like new and checked for that from DG not to mention the backup service if there was a problem

You would have got a one looking like new and checked for that from DG not to mention the backup service if there was a problem I called DG yesterday and got no reply then emailed him but no response yet. I have measured and drawn the fusebox today and will try and get a price to have it made from nylon after xmas. I'll probably offer it as a kit if you want to drill out the rivets on your old one and re-use the origibal contact or a fully made up version. I'm even cpnsidering having longer and shorter versions made and possibly with blade fuses rather than the old glass ones which can be a pain in the bum.

I have been considering this for years as I have had a number go - the base plastic does degrade in time (real Baekalite lasts indefinitely) and either crackes in half or the terminal rivets pull out
Also as they have been out of production some time this is going to be an increasing problem and an irritating source of unreliability
Even risking fire hazard with some of the underbonnet scenes I have noticed recently on even so called concours cars with flammable sealant sprayed everywhere and soaked into aged cotton braiding.
The 12 way blade box is the nearest equivalent and readliy and cheaply available but would not be a straight fit at all

Could this be something the club should look in to remanufacturing?

Yes it could! It could also be sold to P6 owners and will of course fit vP5 3 litres and provide a usefull upgrade to earlier models

The same fuseholder is also found on the Reliant Scimitar 3 litre so I've no doubt they would also be interested in any re-manufacture.

FYI,
The series 2 p6 fuse box is not identical, the fuse contacts on the p6 have the wires crimped on opposed to the p5 where the fuse holder is riveted to the male blade connectors.
P6 boxes do melt though which is frightening when it happens.

Just an update. Following the committee meeting, the club is actively looking in to the possibility of remanufacturing these. As I am sure you are aware, this isn't something that could be done within a short time frame, but I will print a report in the Rover P5 Club magazine 'Take Five' as things progress.

If there is a serious interest I have details of a plastics company who I have had pieces priced up.
The expensive part is the tooling, for the part I enquired about the tooling was around £800. but then you own the tooling and can have a run of one or a thousand. They are also happy if you supply your own tooling.
I will be speaking to the sales lady in a few weeks time as I am making my own tooling. If I can get hold of a spare fuse box I would be happy to get them to quote for the club.
