Unlike her Majesty, I only have one birthday ........ except that having entered it incorrectly when registering on this site, I now have 2! There appears to be no way of correcting it (it is not a changeable field in "update profile"). Short of creating a new user profile, is there any way of putting it right?

Might be easier to have your passport details changed.

I think Warwick may be right. Although I can modify some aspects of your profile, birthday dates are an exception - it only shows one date by the way. To save any further blushes I have deactivated your birthday details - you are now birthdayless. HTH

Thanks Dave, much appreciated. Maybe I'll change my birthday when I get a Panamanian passport Warwick I doubt I'll ever have another UK one (this is not the place for an anti-Big Brother/ID card rant!). Regards, Jim

I think you'll find that the reason your birthday is shown as 11/5 when it should be 5/11 is an 'Americanism'. They always show the month first and then the date, we show the date and then the month being much more conventional than they are. A lot of computer programmes are written that way, as they originate in the States.

What exactly is panamania Jim?
Is it fear of Japanese home electronics products, perhaps?

Hmmmm, no that's still not right, love of anything would be panophilia ......... must be the obsessive need for straw hats or canals!

Just keep taking the medicine...

The pan bit is presumably not a problem? Amania , as Warwick can confirm, is a well known Asian restaurant in Melbourne. Just keep taking the medicine... Now how did you know that Peter? I didn't know that! I had to look it up. It's in Kensington on the west side of the city, near where the Melbourne Cup is run at Flemington. This might be a good opportunity for me to ask a question that has been puzzling me for some time. You said Asian restaurant so I was expecting Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, etc. - but it's an Indian restaurant. When we speak of Asian we are generally referring to the Orient; the Far East and Southeast Asia. Although India is part of Asia geographically, we tend to think of an Indian as an Indian. Now the question ... Over the last couple of years when watching UK TV shows, it seems usual for Indians to refer to themselves using the very broad term of Asian; and they are referred to by others as Asian. This seems to me to be a recent thing and I don't recall it in the past. Is there some sort of strange political correctness going on where "police-speak" has spilled over into general language? You know - "A male person of Asian appearance", rather than an Indian man or a Chinese man. I don't suppose that there are any Indian forum members who could shed some light on this for a confused colonial?

Hi Warwick,
Would love to say I ate there last night but I must confess I also looked it up.I thought that Amian was possibly race related or descriptive of a group of people like Amish (not 'amish). Unfortunately this was not the case and I discovered this restaurant which turned out to be described as Asian. Understand your comments but cannot help.
Its a trend I dislike. Whilst working in New York a couple of years ago I ended most mid December conversations with the wish "Merry Xmas". I was the only one who did this. So as not to upset non-christians everyone else had the habit of saying Happy Holidays. We'll finally wind up saying dear people I suspect. The Amian will become a world restaurant.

As it 'appens, 'amish is me son's name.
It is a shame Peter, isn't it. When I lived in Singapore in the late '70s with Malays, Chinese, Indians, and European and Australian ex-pats, we all enjoyed each others' religious and cultural festivities. Fortunately it's still much the same here but I guess we'll have to keep up with the rest of the world.
But what I'd really like to know is what Jim has done with his canoe. At first I thought that it must have been a play on words, but if it is I can't figure it out.

Warwick, "Canoeless in Panama" is a reference to a news story from last year: UK prison guard faked his death in a canoeing accident, then in a very amateurish way (photo of the "dead" man and his wife on the Panamanian estate agent's web site etc), tried to start a new life in Panama. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7292469.stm if you want to know more. Regards, Jim

Ah yes; I remember that. It was in the papers here too. But if you'd asked me, I wouldn't have remembered that it was Panama.

Jim made his point. I had previously imagined that nothing could be worse than up the creek without a paddle. Up the creek without the canoe however defies imagination and is certainly inviting catastrophe. We now have to ask Jim about the whereabouts of his wife...
As to your son being called 'amish does this imply your convict ancestors were Londoners or French?

Actually he mostly gets called Ham or Mish by his friends. But no; no convicts - we're relative newcomers. My great great grandfather arrived from Liverpool 155 years ago next week. They settled in Kensington so wouldn't have been very far from your Indian restaurant. He was born in Lancashire, but that side of the family originated in Leicestershire. Mum's side are Scot and English, with a faint trace of French in the distant past. Actually my brother was in the UK about a year or so ago and visited a few of the family locations. He visited one house that a branch of Mum's family had a connection with and found the present owner to be a member of the Wilks family.

Strange I should mention your son's name by coincidence. And all because of Jim (Beam?).
Warwick I must congratulate you on your heritage and forefathers. I should have expected nothing else from P5B owner!!
