The electrics are are very unreliable including the ECU. The 2.7 V6 is a good engine but being alloy suffers neglect poorly.
The 4 cylinder M20 engine is a deveopemny of the O series engine used in Princesses and the under powered SD1 2 litre. The engine is very prone to head gasket failure.
As to the mechanicals generally they are rather poor quality - ball joints/bearings ebing undersized wear out fast.
It looks very smart though. See the Rover 820 Club. Bodily door bottoms and terminal rot in the D posts it used HSS steel that cannot be welded properly but is often bodged

I ran an 827 Rover Vitesse for 13 years and it was very good and very reliable. The bodywork shows it's Leyland design roots in the end and the electrics can be a little troublesome but not a big deal to fix. A have a similar age French car at present and that is 10 times worse. A mate ran an 827 Sterling Coupe for several years and had no trouble. The later British 825 engine is a disaster but the Honda 827 is fine as long as it has had it's oil changed every 6,000 miles (later service schedules say 12,000) and it has had a new cam belt (due at 120,000). There are probably some of these cars out there that have had a nice easy life with a retired colonel and been serviced to death. Find one of those and you have a cheap and very reliable bargain. Good luck

A seemingly tidy but un MOt'ed example was offered and sold on another forum i visit occasionally for £250
Was a 2.7 coupe with al the goodies in a nice colour aswell.. i quite like the look of them but they hold no appeal for me as a car to own.. its just driven from the wrong end really..
