Pinion sheared off at the front end, parting at the locking nut and spit pin. Before attempting a repair - due to recovery operation i now have a box of teeth and a grumbling towards the rear end although the half shafts had been disabled to allow towing. The wheels will not spin etc. Will damage have been caused such as stress to other parts? In these circumstances is it more practical to replace the whole rear axle complete? As this Mk1 is generally noisy at high speeds being 4-speed with no overdrive, will parts from any later model (incl P5B) with higher ratio be suitable?

Bad luck diffs/axles are long lasting - I would not recommend deviating from standard - the early 3 litre engine was gutless and accleration will be even worse. The standard 3.9:1 diff was used on many P4's and Mk 1&2 autos
Far better would be to fit a 4.3:1 with overdrive.
The only other option is the 3.5:1 from Mk3's and V8's which would lowere cruising engine speed at a massive expense on acceleration.
All P4/P5's and most Series LR diffs will fit straight on to you axle - simple bolt on job but its heavy and speedo will have to be recalibrated if 3.9:1 not refitted

Thanks Phil - now determined that the differential bearings are shot. I have access to a 4.3:1 replacement diff and also an overdrive. If i fit the latter, how do i deal with the rear of the gearbox mountings please?

Unfortunately the 4 speed manual gerabox case is unique to early Mk1's so you need a K1 or Mk1a overdrive/gearbox assmembly complete. The Mk2 & 3 is different again with its remote change

Do i assume therefore that this overdrive/gearbox was not used on any previous models, eg P4 or Landrover Phil?

Its the casings that are different and the also the gear change linkage - the general design dates back to the 1930's but few parts are interchangeable unless in the right time frame.
The P4 box/overdrive from 1957-1964 was virtually the same as the Mk1/Mk1a P5 apart from the case even the ratios. I suppose it would be possible to mix/match and fit one of these to an early P5 as they had the same gear change.
The Mk2/3 gearbox overdrive with remote gearchange can be made to fit a P4 if the rear mount on the extension housing is used
The Laycock de Normanville overdrive was also bought in which was used in many British cars of 1950-1970's but adapted to fit the the P4/P5 gearbox

Transpires that the crown wheel/pinion teeth have disintegrated. I have temporarily fitted a 4.3:1 diff until i can obtain a 3.9:1 which is required. What running differences can i expect from this and in particular what risks if any.

No risks really as but the speedo will under record and top speed will be down and noisy.
Acceleration will be good!
The 3.9;1 diffs are plentiful as a lot of P4's used them as well as Auto Mk 1 & 2's P5's

3.9:1 must be like hen's teeth then - no offers to date!

You asking in the wrong place - try a P4 breaker Richard Hedger or John Wearing if David Green has none
