Good morning, As the Rover returned from the paintshop, all wiring from the boot lid was gone. That probably happened while taking the lid out. I now want to fix the registration plate lights and see that three lights are in there. Then there is the switch under the bootlid of which I've forgotten the meaning?? Any clues with which wires the lights / switch should be connected? I've tried search on boot (lid) wiring, but to no avail. Thanks a lot Guus

Reverse green and brown. Number plate red two lamps. Boot lamp red. Number plate and boot lamp all feed into red and green. reverse goes to the reverse switch.

Puzzled by reference to a switch on bootlid.
Boot light is a self contained item with a mercury tilt switch built in, no external switch fitted , unlike the under bonnet lights on coupes.
Perhaps this is a later addition?

No switch for boot lamp, just goes to the red and green same as number plate lamps, all this wiring is connected inside the boot lid, unless someone has put in a boot lamp.

The mercury boot light is standard fit - probably does not work as the mercury gets dirty and the contacts tarnish.
There is a purple live pickup under the parcel shelf if you want this light to operate independently of the tail/number plate lights on o/s

The mercury boot lamp is wired to work when the side light are switched on, but yes as Phil says you could wire to a lve feed. Have you got the boot lamp.

Is there any solution to the mercury switch other than stripping and cleaning the contacts and mercury? Is anyone using a substitute for the mercury switch?

I once made a simple coutesy light switch mounted on bracket operated by the boot hinge - got sold with the car but worked well

Is there any solution to the mercury switch other than stripping and cleaning the contacts and mercury? Is anyone using a substitute for the mercury switch? Somewhere in my boxes of assorted electrical bits, I'm sure I have a similar style of switch that uses a steel ball instead of a blob of mercury. I think it's from a GS Citroen. Will have a scrounge around tomorrow.

I have made two using this type of switch Warwick using the old switch so it looks correct only problem is the case is a contact so I turned a piece of Nylon to fit inside the original shell bought from Farnells I think
