Looking for some advice for a friend's 3 litre mk2c overdrive problem. The overdrive does not operate - fault finding has proved the column switch and the solenoid work. Working through the wiring diagram the problem appears to be the 'throttle switch'. The overdrive works if this part is bypassed. That's where we are stumped as according to James Taylor's book the overdrive kickdown was deleted from the Mk2's introduction in 1962. Are the 'throttle switch' and 'overdrive kickdown' one and the same? If not, what is the overdrive throttle switch on a Mk2c, where is it and can it be replaced or bypassed safely? Any ideas folks? Regards from Simon in Suffolk

The switches are teh same but do 2 different functions - yours just has the throttle switch switch merely prevents DISENGAGEMENT unless throttle is open. It cab be bypassed but it si very unlikely faulty. Just connect togther.
The switches are fitted to later P4's so therea plent about but it it is morely likely to be the relay - this is rarer and more expenisve. You should be to power the W1 & W2 terminals direct and hear it clonk as it operates.
I assume you have checked that teh solenoid is receiving 12v and that the fuse has not blwon or its terminals correded - this is usual problem.

Solenoid works if powered directly and fuses etc checked. Relay works too when powered. Problem has been traced to the change from yellow/red tracer wire to yellow/green tracer wire. Unless a cut wire is the problem (unlikely) it must be related to the only component in that circuit which is the throttle switch.

Operate the switch manually - it may not be adjusted properly - or try bridging out the terminals.
The cables can beark internalyy but just run a jumper cable

Hi Phil, thanks for your help. Passing info on by phone to friend who is 150 miles away so can't actually test the circuits myself. Where is the throttle switch on the car? Accelerator linkage under bonnet I guess but can't see it immediately. Can you see it with the air cleaner assembly removed?

It can be seen without removing the air filter - look around the bulkhead near the brake master cylinder - it is fitted so as to catuate fron the throttle rods - obvious if still fitted.
BTW it is not a good idea to try fixing these cars without a WSM!
