My ammeter flicks instead of holding a steady charge, I have looked for loose connections, it had a new alternator, a 6RA relay and a 4TR regulator about four years ago, any advice would be welcome.

Sticking/worn or dirty field brushes - internal break in cables, corroded terminals (the main junction is under the just where a leaky windscreen drips!) faulty 6RA test it by bypassing)
Have you got an electric pump?
