A good day at Duxford 2/8/09. Suggestion has been made that i might be able to fit overdrive to my early Mk1 but that it should include the gearbox. If this is recommended can anyone tell me if any other Rover (eg P4s, Land Rover) would be the easiest solution. Is there a common part number? Will the gearbox come out through the car floor, or is it engine out yet again!

As I mentioned before it is possible to retro fit an overdrive but only from a Mk1 P5 unless you want to modify the subrame and tunnel and fit the set up with remote changes from a Mk2/3 manual. You will aslo have to use the front section of the prop-shaft
It is possible to remove the box from inside but you may have to remove the engine to modify the subframe and mounts anyway.
Some of the internals from P2-P3-P4 and LR may wel bes omilar but it is teh casings aand monts that are different.
I suggest you speak and visit David Green so you can actually see what is involved - anyrthing is possible if you having machining facilities as even a P4 overdrive is available to replace the freewheel for P2 models.
The P5 and LR gearboxes all derived from the prewar early 1930's running borad Rovers which is why it could not be used to power the V8 models it was not designed for such power output and later LR and RRover gearboxes for V8's were totally redesigned
The 4 speed manual is a very rare setup anyway so a Mk1 or Mk1a with long P4 gearstick and overdrive is very likely to turnup soon anyway - thsi would be far easier option as you can get all the controls/switches/throttel linkages etc you will need

A nice idea then Phil - but the problems seem almost insurmountable. Maybe i should just settle for an original early Mk1 then. Thanks again

Nothing is insurmountable - however if yours is an original Mk1 non-overdive that may be the best idea. I would fit an overdrive set up from a Mk1 or Mk1a (the remote stick has problems)
