Back again. Today I received a new iginition switch. Of course I didn't make notes of the original wiring, so... I can distinguish a '1' (double pin), a '2' (double pin), a '3' (single pin) and a '4' (double pin).
Anyone can give me the exact wiring sequence? Thanks Guus

1 = Brown/Yellow - main feed from battery 2 = White - Ignition 3 = White/Red - starter 4 = Brown/Purple - Accessoires eg Radio/Wipers/Heater

Position 1 could be Brown and White.

Yes is likely to be as White indicates Ignition and Yellow is Charging circuits whtehre a smain or tracer. P5/P5B's use the standard Lucas colours used by almost all UK cars (except Ford/Vauxhall part modified) This link explains the logic of the colours that makes things easier to follow unles a PO's has messed it up! www.dimebank.com/LucasColours.htmlRemmeber for P5 Club Members I have PDF copies in colour or plain kindly done by Steve Munford and corrections for Rover Co's printers errors rectified with my assistance that are far easier - full deails in Members Section

Fitted as described, but problem remains. Did a test again with the main plug-lead (to the distributor) and with a single plug lead (to the engine) and sparks are fine as long as the starter engaged. When releasing the key, the sparking stopped. When I press the accelarator, a 'sewing machine' sound is audible for a few seconds.
Please help, since the car must be moved in today, will be leaving for a vacation tomorrow!
Thanks a lot. Guus

Guus Guus first of all is there 12v to the coil when the ignition is on not when the starter is turning? You may be getting the 12v from the contact on the starter motor when it is engaged! If there is no 12 volts on the coil you have the switch wired incorrectly you can use a bulb with leads or a meter to prove this or take 12v from the fuse panel to the coil.

Thank you John. The iginition (on 2) is a double white-wired plug. Even if I connect that to nr 1, it is still the same!

Hot wire it to move the car - I am not saying how on here but email me if you do not know how. It is so simple!
If the connections are correct its likely to be a faulty wire or terminal/joint. Pull on each one and test for contiunity with a test bulb

REgards Guus Hi Guus if that is the case you still have to establish there is 12v on the coil? I am assuming you have no ballast resistor? that would be the only thing between the 2 whites and the coil or a dodgy connection a Phil says but you must make sure of the 12v one way or another
