Having fitted new accelerator bushes I have finally been in a position to get the engine running. However although the engine starts fine from cold if I let it run up to temperature when I turn it off it 'over runs' for a few seconds and it is virtually impossible to start it again. The car has lain idle for five years but I have put in fresh petrol, cleaned and gapped the plugs, points etc. Am I right in thinking you can only check the timing statically as per the workshop manual? Is there something I should be checking/adjusting on the distributor?
Thanks
Roger

The inital timing must be set statically at 6º BTDC and then dynamically with strobe with vac advance pipe plugged and at idle and retarded up to 6º to prevent pinking on low octane fuel
More like sticking valves etc needs a good run but check advance weights under dizzy base plate are not siezed

It would appear that my problems were caused by the mixture being too rich. After adjusting the mixture I was able to drive the car out of the garage for the first time in 5 years. However upon trying to restart the car I found the float chamber pouring out fuel. After some investigation I discovered my float was full of petrol. I am convinced my car doesn't want to get back on the road! Anyway, on the positive side I have been given a digital camera for my birthday so I might at last be able to post some pictures.

With regard to timing I'd like to check mine dynamically. Bought car with an electronic ignition already fitted and not sure how to check timing statically with it. Dynamic timing better anyway I guess. 3 litres should be ok on 95octane petrol at the standard timing of 3deg btdc without pinking shouldn't they? What idling speed have others used to check the timing dynamically? Was there ever an official Rover rpm quoted, can't find one if there was.

Dynamic timic is far better and must always be set at idling speed - max 600rpm with vac advanced disconected and tube plugged. The centrigual and the vac advance can be tested by increasing the revs.
With regard to intial timing set at 6 deg and only retard back to 2deg if pinking occurs with unleaded 95 - mine is at 4deg. Each engine has different requirements and factory settings should only be used as a starting point 3º may be OK but not necesarily the optimum for your engine
BTW its best to set the dwell with a meter before retiming 35º+/- 3 but make sure your dwell meter copes with positive earth systems as some read in reverse ie it will be 25º
