James Taylor's book p41 states Champion N5 became approved. However, among the millions of Champion N5 plugs shown on the internet, which one do members find to be best performing on 3-litres? Last item to consider in getting the starting/running right!

I have alwys found Champion plugs most unsuited - NGK or Bosch or even Unipart
NGK B6ES, GSP 4362 (cannot find a Bosch number yet) however as you have the earler non-Weslake head you may find these too COLD and the hotter B5ES as fitted to 2.6 litres Non Westlakes may nor foul as the B6ES could do

i do have a Westlake head! All manufacturers seem to have 100s of sub-species!

I thought you had a Mk1? Using the wrong grade can burn holes in pistons!!

i have Phil - chassis 6259-01044 - engine 6259-00542 built 22 June 1959. I asked the same question to tech@sparkplugs.co.uk and they have replied: "The problem is that your engine requires a non resistorised plug and modern, higher performance plugs tend to employ a resistor and a projected tip, this can cause issues when used with an old or weak ignition system and potentially engine damage if not designed to use a projected tip plug. Careful testing is required to safely use a non standard plug. I suspect a new set of Champion N5C or NGK B6ES will be your best 'safe' bet, perhaps try a slightly warmer plug such as B5ES if problems persist, listening carefully for any signs of detonation".

Thanks Norvin - that is who have replied to my last post. I think you have a P5B which might be different to my 3-litre straight, but which actual ones do you purchase?

Yes but I also have a P4 100 and I use B6ES, it runs very well on these plugs.

I think sparkplug co agreed with me!
My 100 fouled up B6ES's occasionally so I use B5ES
