I am getting petrol leaking from the gasket area between the carburetor and the air intake elbow. I assume this is because I have a flooding problem. Any thoughts as to the cause?

Start with the float chamber.

May well be perforated float or leaking needle valve - easy to check by removing lid - make sure economiser banjo special washer is present and OK avoid disturbing it though if you can

Thanks, I will investigate today. It is probably partly my fault as the petrol is a few years old as we have moved around a lot in the last few years and the Rover has got a bit neglected. I think I have a carb rebuild kit I bought from Jonathan Wadhams a few years ago. I will check if it has a new float chamber needle valve and float in it.
I am not familiar with the special banjo bolt washer. What does it look like?

Kit will not have float but will have needle and seat and washer which is a fibre ring with cut-outs in the inner edge
Needle valve may be just gummed up - old perol leaves ansty sticky residue that does not easliy dissolve in new petrol (gas!)
