Go to your 'Profile' - see top of page next to 'Logout'
Select 'modify profle'.
Half way down under pesonal information, are instructions on adding an avatar and accompanying text if required.
Include your info and select 'Modify profile' button at the bottom of the page.

OK, so I am resurrecting an old post here, but I also had trouble setting up an avatar, and based on the posts I see around here, others are having trouble, too.
I followed the instructions, but each time I submitted my changes I received no error and my changes were not saved. I have tracked it back down to this:
If the URL you are trying to use is SSL encrypted (ie: it starts with "https://"), then it will not work. I originally tried using this URL:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wqm9EgfHWsU/TpS4uor0ZmI/AAAAAAAACMs/1wRB7oSoVlU/s800/IMG_0116.JPG
That did not work, but this one did. The only difference is that I deleted the "s" after "http".
http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wqm9EgfHWsU/TpS4uor0ZmI/AAAAAAAACMs/1wRB7oSoVlU/s800/IMG_0116.JPG
Perhaps that will help someone?

Try changing your avatar image to a simple file name without the underscore and all in lower case. eg. p5avatar.jpg

I don't think that's needed, as it works just fine as-is, just so long as I do not use an SSL encrypted link. This ProBoards software is certainly unique in how things work. Getting e-mail notifications working was like a scavenger hunt; easily 4 times as difficult as it should have been.

Thanks Phil. I got that message but couldn't see the relevance to Imagecave. I find the internet very baffling at times Strange cyberterm "Outrage" I've seen it before on the net.

Thanks Phil. I got that message but couldn't see the relevance to Imagecave. I find the internet very baffling at times Strange cyberterm "Outrage" I've seen it before on the net. Imagecave is a picture hosting site where you download or upload pictures another is Photobucket plenty more to choose from, the Avitar is linked to the site and sometimes due to problems it disappears

I would suggest that anyone looking for image hosting skip the other sites and use Google's Picasa Web Albums at picasaweb.google.com . The user interface is superior and you're much less likely to have outage problems like you have with ImageCave/RipSide. My $0.02, Tom

I currently use Photobucket and have only retained Imagecave because of the pics I posted on this Forum some 3-6 years ago

Well I hope they weren't being hosted by GoDaddy. I also belong to an Australian French car forum, AussieFrogs. www.aussiefrogs.com/forum/index.phpIt started small about 12 years ago and for many years it was hosted by a small regional ISP, the owner of which is a friend of mine. (My office is in his building). As AF grew and grew and became a very large global forum, it out grew the servers here and they moved to the big web hosting service, GoDaddy, in the US. That was in about 2006. Last year GoDaddy decided to migrate the forum onto a new server. However, thanks to some butterfingered clown handling the move, they managed to delete the entire forum's data-base from that day back to 2006 - and then they deleted the back-up. There was no warning, there was no apology - just a bad attitude. Not their problem. Thousands and thousands of posts containing valuable information, photos and advice, all lost forever. Fortunately some of that information (albeit a tiny percentage) was able to be recovered or rebuilt from copies, caches, printed material, or just being rewritten from peoples own files. After running as a temporary site for several weeks it was rebuilt late last year with a new hosting service, but virtually everything between 2006 and the beginning of this year has gone. A complete debacle and a very unprofessional attitude to their clients.

Warwick: If you were subjected to the advertisements that GoDaddy airs here in the US, you'd know that they are a flashy, but not very professional operation. That's what I get from their projected image, at least.

I see what you mean Tom. They've just started advertizing on TV here.
Just as a matter of interest David, where are we hosted? In the UK I presume ... and under your hawk-like scrutiny.

Hi Warwick
ProBoards is US based remotely hosted company.
According to their sales info:
ProBoards is the largest host of free forums on the Internet. We provide the best forums and customer service to help your on line community thrive..
I must say we have had very few problems with Proboards and their level of assistance is excellent. They are currently testing a 'Beta version five' (we currently run version four) so expect some 'improvements' in the near future

Doh!!
Sorry David. Typing without thinking. Of course ... it's hosted by ProBoards. I knew that didn't I. It's bleeding obvious. I must be going senile.

Updating this old thread again...
It seems that linking a photo in the body of a post will not work if you use a secure link, which is Google's default.
As a result, this does not work:
[img]https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ew8E36eJuqw/T1UGlS1tDvI/AAAAAAAACfQ/I2lZ4oeyWLs/s640/Rover%2520head.jpg[/img] But this does:
[img]http://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ew8E36eJuqw/T1UGlS1tDvI/AAAAAAAACfQ/I2lZ4oeyWLs/s640/Rover%2520head.jpg[/img] I thought that I would post it up in case anyone else stumbles across that. Perhaps I should start another thread, too?

Erm.... Both work peachy looking at this on my iPod!
I find it much more convenient to use the mobile app now. Easy to just relax watching telly while I scroll through latest threads.
Anyone else use pro boards mobile?

Barry,
Both links are good, but you shouldn't see either picture in my post. My point was that, if you try to embed the picture in a post using the "https" link, it won't work.

Even worse! I put the IMG tags in a code block, so they shouldn't appear in the body of the post at all!
