I now have my clutch hydraulic system and exhaust system repaired. This has allowed me to use the car on a semi regular basis. The sticking brake caliper seems to have resolved itself but I bought a set of new seals just in case. Also the rear brakes were getting warm but after about 100 miles they to seem to have completely freed up.
At this stage, here are the issues that I need to resolve next.
1. It will always start but it takes about 5 to 6 goes with the starter before it fires up. Once running it seems to not need much choke after about 1 minute
2. If I start in second which I prefer to, there is quite a lot of juddering. Is this likely to be clutch plate wear / contamination or the gear box mount
3. Tappets are very noisy and I recall from previous attempts that I could not adjust the noise out via setting the clearance with a feeler gauge
4. The power steering has a lot of play around the center position. The screw is turn down quite far on the shaft and if I turn it further the steering is difficult to turn
I would appreciate any thoughts on these matters
Regards,
David Roberts

Instant start is the norm hot or cold - it may improve with use. It may be a little rich - remember though the the choke is fast idle only for first stage if carb/cable is set up correctly.
2nd gear start is for normal use and should be 100% smooth - check all mounts and that linkage is operating smoothly - may be worn clutch!
Engine should run with silence of a Rolls Royce of the time (ie the IOE 6) See other threads on worn camsaft and tappet rollers with flats worn on them - common. Use Clickdajust tool rather than feelers as rocker pads may have indents
Define "lot of play" up to 4" is acceptable at sterring wheel rim but should be much less - are all ball joints OK. These, especially if not OEM, are not really strong enough for power steering and can wear quickly and even slight slack in each can add up to a lot of play at steering wheel. Also make sure Idler has no play and has oil in it!
The brakes on these cars readily seize all round when car not used
