The never-ending P5 restoration.......
Excessive oil consumption on a fully reconditioned engine (Mk3) has been proved to be caused by oil being sucked into No:2 cylinder past the head gasket from the top rocker cover area. The oil collects around the head bolts, and one bolt has allowed oil to seep down and be sucked in (during the induction stroke) and to leak past the head gasket, which is quite thin between the hole for the bolt and the edge of the gasket, into the cylinder area. It is the bolt hole between cylinders 1 and 2, but leaking into No: 2 cylinder.
Enough oil was getting in to completely gum up the sparkplug.
When the engine was recently reconditioned and reassembled, a new steel shim gasket was used (right side up!) as well as copper sealing compound, and the head tightened to specs. However, it appears to not be sealing properly.
The head and block were checked and worked on as part of the reconditioning process to ensure they were flat, (when they were separated they were in quite good condition anyway for the head off for the first time).
This new "leaky" gasket has no manufacturers' markings or name on it that I can see.
My question to the forum is: is there any preferred methodology or ORMT's(Old Rover Mechanic's Tricks) to ensure that this does not happen again? Are there alternative head gaskets to the steel shim type available; has anyone else had this problem, what is the better gasket sealing compound to use, etc, etc. Any suggestions would be really valuable in overcoming this issue.
It seems that the clearance between the head bolt clearance hole in the steel shim gasket and the edge of the gasket is small enough to be a potential problem, but maybe someone else has a better suggestion or answer? (Pour some sealant material down each head bolt area??)
I have a new replacement head gasket set from "Gaskets for Classics" and this (shim) gasket is marked "Corgasyl", "this way up", and "Made in England". Any comments on this please before installing.........with fingers crossed! Not many suppliers of Rover head gaskets here...
