hi all,
my beloved p5 will not turn over when the key is turned.
the battery is good and there is a live feed at the starter terminal have removed starter and tested on bench and it worked fine.
im guessing that the only things left to check are the ignition switch and the inhibitor switch but i dont have a clue how to test them.
any ideas anyone im hoping the ignition switch is faulty as the inhibitor switch looks a right pig to access

You could well be right - the inhibitor switch is just a slide switch which also controls the revsee lights - its connected to the gear change linkage and the slide can break or the contacts can corrode. Do the revere lights work? The switch is on the engine side of the bullkhead near the brake master cylinder and the the ignition fed wire from the ignition switch to starter motor can be bridged out easily with a jump cable to check if motor will turn.
If it does not run a jump wire from small Lucar on solenoid on bulkhead on passenger side to main battery terminal on solonoid (the one that does not go to motor. If it turns then starter switch is faulty (or cable/connector is broke)
The swich is a standard one which is obtainable from any Auto electrics supplier such as Vehicle Wiring Products for about a tenner

Phil, your last para, are you referring to the inhibitor switch? If so, could you supply a link to a supplier? Thanks

No I meant the ignition switch which is easiest to sort
For Inhibitor switch in 1st para - David Green and secondhand only unless a Mk3 with the BW35 box

Is there a relay by the right hand side of the heater that controls the inhibitor switch and starter as well, could this be at fault!

3 litres do not have this relay - DG boxes do not have an inhibitor switch in them as with the BW35 fitted to Mk3's and the V8's

hi all,
sorry for the lack of info my p5 is a mk 3 with the borg warner and i have just had a look at the wurkshop manual and to fit an tnhibitor switch you need a bit of kit with a light bulb on it.
seems its not just a case of screwing it into the box.

It is just a matter of screwing in or out but it as to be set just right hence the light. Before even touching it check its not the ignition switch or wiring down to the inhibitor switch. They normally do not need adjustment - the Lucars sometimes fall off it or the cable breaks!

Hi Phil,
tried a different ign switch today from one i had in a spare instrument panel still no joy, the reverse lights do work and the wiring to inhibitor was connected ok.
will now invest in new switch but do i have to set it up with the light or can i count the number of turns as i unscrew it.
regards paul

Disconnect and join the white/red wires on the inhibitor switch to prove it's that at fault, but DO NOT use the car like it. In my experience unless you can get a NOS Lucas switch don't bother as the new ones seen on ebay etc are cheap chinese cr*p and you're better off with a good used one.

hi harvey,
done as you suggested and lo and behold she turned over so at least i now know the inhibitor switch is at fault.
