Why would you take out the wolds most reliable plodder of a engine, and replace with that pig of a lump,ya not going to get another 40 years out of one of those. They talk of originality and balls the look of the bulkead up in the second link... "money better spent on powering the wife up with better rocker covers" but what do i know

Playing devils advocate here but who is going to keep their car for 40 years? Not many....
Taking out that old plodder and putting in something exciting and powerful (that still looks like the original) has an awful lot of plusses to me......especially the look on the face of the Range Rover drivers who think they can muscle in front of you from the lights ;D (Takes me back to a few traffic light grand prix I've had with classic R/Rovers over the years!)
4 Speed auto also sounds like a fantastic idea too if you use your car fairly regularly. Nice job if you can afford it.
There are plenty of original cars out there, a few modifieds have been long overdue..

Also playing Devils advocate Roy there are a lot of mutterings at the moment on people increasing cc/modifying and keeping their classic status

Hi John, I think its always been the case about emissions for example that if you have a 2001 engine in your classic, that for the MOT it should pass the 2001 emission test for that vehicle. Not to mention insurance complications. Plus there is the change to DVLA rules about changing your own engine and needing now to provide a proper receipt and proof of the originating vehicle before you can register the change with DVLA. I wonder how many people ever tell the DVLA about the changes they have made? As has always been the case, you pays your money and you takes your choice. Its your car!

Thinking about it again, presumably they could never link classic status to the original engine? People have been merrily throwing away the original P5 v8s for years, eg when they have problems or something breaks. Theres got to be a lot of SD1 engines in P5s.
Where could they draw the line between original engine/ original spec similar age/ original capacity but newer/ larger capacity and newer. What about a stroker kit in an original block? Who would know?
Maybe all of a sudden a high comp 60/70s V8 will become worth keeping! But MOT bays will have to become experts at identifying them..
Sounds a little unworkeable to me.

I wonder Roy it's all very good until something happens! with all the discussions going on at the moment I feel happy running my original engine at least I know I am on the right side of the line! The various bodies are doing their best to keep the "classic status" flag flying but for how long

Everyone with our wonderful cars should voice their concerns. Imagine having to fork out £400 a year road tax because you have a v8 After 23 years of ownership that would finally be it for me

"money better spent on powering the wife up with better rocker covers" but what do i know I was just commenting on RPI,theres better engines for your pound or dollar, out there,Ihave experience myself and know shed loads of others having trouble with the 4.6,not the electrics. A nice lexus conversion or small block yanK When i got my car i was going to inplant a 3.5 efi rangey lump and box, electric windows ,make it nice and modern but instead went completely the other way and everything had to be be right and original, even down to a 1969 lpg switch over switch.and keeping that rope rear seal...Just think the old girl dererved it.......
