I have had my rover now since 2006 Really the second owner from new Cost £700. all serious rust had been done in 1996 and stored inside all the time and had only 48,000 miles on the clock Things done so far New Gas Shockers , new bushes , new water pipes and brakes overhauled, Interior Re-coloured, wood cappings re-done last year stripped it down to bare metal and re-sprayed it. Just fitted 2 near enough new springs cost £30. because was sitting too low also a lower ratio rear axle as old one was past saving cost £50. Things still to do New carpets, new back bumper, front bumper needs rechromed oil leaks to attend to but all takes time and of course money norman

Hi John The rear axle was from a p5 mk2 3litre I think as there was not a lot left of the actual car but the axle was in really good nick and the springs had also been renewed very recently as the gaitors were still filled with grease. I had no idea if the diff was alright and had no idea if it would do on my p5b ,I had to cut a good 1/2 inch from the extentions on the ends of the hubs as the hubs were for the steel wheels fitting on, and were protruding too far for the rostyles to sit tight to the brake drum, also had to adjust the hand brake rods to fit as the new axle only had the one bracket for the mechanism instead of the p5b double bracket, and had to change over the brake cylinders from the p5b to the p5 one and use the handbrake linkage that was on the axle as one was shorter. Its a bit slower pulling away but faster at cruising speed and no noises what so ever coming from the diff or bearings i was quite amazed . Norman

All done very nicely Norman My only concern is if it is a Mk2 Axle? the ratio is 3.9:1 which is higher than the 3.54:1 so pulling away should be easier the box will change earlier and the engine RPM will be higher increasing your 70mph rpm to 3920 instead of 3500 (on 185x60x15) and your fuel consumption will also suffer.

It might be even worse as manual 3 litres used higher 4.3 : 1 ratio

No damage as such just the engine will be revving it's nuts off

can the diff just be changed over as I still have the old one You can change the diff leaving the axle casing in-situ, you need to pull the halfshafts outwards to give clearance though.

Hi Norman
I live in south wales Abertillery NP13 2EQ I am interested in trying a 3.9 diff in my 3.5 although I have been told there is a Mk11 auto for spares hiding just 3miles away so might try that one first. I am about to put my car back on the road after doing some body work. But I use it every day as my main transport for the last 13 years but the car has been in the family for 39years.I also have a Mk1a Jan 1960 which I intend to restore manual with overdrive.
