I am in the process of organising an event for the St George’s day FBHVC “National Use Your Classic Car” day. The event, although small, was a reasonable success last year and a small photograph of our gathering appears on the FBHVC website at www.fbhvc.co.uk/events/events-fbhvc.htm .
I thought we might repeat the event in 2007 but with a difference.
We often hear voices, including my own, bemoaning the fact that Rover events seem to be very much the same old “park up in a field and natter” events. Very sociable but…..
As an alternative, what I have in mind is a Trains, Planes and Automobiles event which will involve :
SUNDAY 22nd APRIL 2007
Meet around 9:00- 9:30am for morning coffee/bacon butties at Sywell Airfield in Northants (Approx 15 miles from J165 on the M1 and roughly the same from the M1/M6 Junction).
Leave around 10.00am to follow a pre- planned route through the countryside to a couple of venues of interest
Those that I have in mind are:
Morning: Planes
The Carpetbaggers Museum in Harrington Nothants: The Carpetbagger Aviation Museum was formed in 1993 for the 50th Anniversary reunion of the USAAF's 801st / 492nd Bomb Group (The Carpetbaggers) at Harrington. It is housed in the Group Operations Building on the Administration Site of the former Station 179 airfield at Harrington harringtonmuseum.org.uk/HistoryTempsford.htm
Lunch: Automobiles
Rockingham Classics & Sports Cars: www.rcands.co.uk/ where you can munch on a sandwich and have a leisurely coffee in a nice warm coffee shop upstairs or browse around whatever classic car and classic motocycle delights are in the showroom downstairs.
Afternoon: Trains:
Northampton & Lamport Railway: If steam trains are your thing, this is the place for you. Enthusiasts run this steam and diesel railway either side of Chapel Brampton
Finally gathering late afternoon at an upmarket hotel, with a nice big sociable lounge area (http://www.kilworthhouse.co.uk/) for an early evening meal in their orangery restaurant before heading home.
The total route mileage will be in the region of 55 miles around some of Northamptonshire’s finest countryside
At the moment I estimate the cost (subject to numbers) to include entrance to the Harrington Museum, entrance to The Railway and a two course evening meal in the restaurant (from 6.00pm) to be around £25.00 per person. I may be able to arrange a discount for children but need to speak to the venues first.
All in all the emphasis of the day being a nice leisurely relaxing and interesting day in good company wafting around in the king of cars
PLEASE let me know whether it is of interest to you so that I can get some idea of numbers and make the bookings as time is running out Prompt responses by e-mail to p5rover-eastmids@yahoo.co.uk will be very much appreciated.
Local accommodation is available at reasonable rates if anyone wants to stay nearby on the evening before the event. If there is enough interest we could arrange a get together on the Saturday night.
