Has anyone ever fitted a different front bumper? I want to get away from the "massive" look caused by the central section with its number plate housing, ideally just a plain bumper all the way across, although curved to fit the front of the car of course. I also intend to remove all over-riders for a cleaner look. anyone know what might fit?
I thought about some of the early-50s Americans, eg Ford or Chevy, but of course they aren't exactly falling out of trees in this country.

I have a 1965 ROVER P5 here in Vermont. I am in the process of modifying the car, - - extensively. Of interest to you is the modification of the bumper systems. By getting a composite bumper off a modern car (BMW, Lincoln -US, Chevrolet -US, etc.) I will bond composite tubes to the units and simply bolt them in place. I am looking at 75 lbs weight savings with a more modern look. I will be at the National Rally 09/08-09 so you could see my photos and we could talk if you come.

I hardly think that Buick item could be classed as plain or less massive!

Richard, I'm also modifying a P5. what's your plan for drivetrain gauges, brakes, rims etc?

The Buick item looks impressive but I was thinking of the "resto-mod" look, ideally the look I want is the standard bumper without the overriders or plate housing. Richard, your idea sounds intriguing - any pics?

Probably the Ford Mustang circa 1960's is the best with plenty available as they are still being made and probably cheaper than the rover p6 item. What do you think? www.partstrain.com/ShopByDepartment/Bumper/FORD/MUSTANG

Steve, d'oh! never thought of the P6, yes it does look like what I'm looking for and shouldn't be hard to find. The Mustang item should be easy to find in repro form but looking at images of the 64 and 67 generations they both have a kind of stepped effect seen from above, to fit with the grille which protrudes forward between the lights. Thanks for the p6 tip, Tim

I got hold of a decent P6 bumper for a tenner ... it is a few inches narrower, but I offered it up and the shape of it seems to fit okay, and i dont think the lack of width will be a problem. The brackets will need to be altered of course.
This weekend, as it is obviously going to be too wet for anything else, will remove the existing bumper and try to mock it up for a photo.

Ok well I did that. In these pictures the p6 bumper is merely balanced in place on the p5 bumper irons, to give a visual idea how it will look. I am looking for some irons off a scrapper that I can modify. The first photo shows that the "arrow" shape of the bumper fits well to the front of the car, although you probably need to imagine it fitting closer once the irons have been sorted. i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o548/timsisson/IMAG01062.jpgThis second picture taken from a lower angle gives an idea how it would look from a distance/in front. i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o548/timsisson/IMAG01042.jpgIt is a subtle difference, I admit, but I do think the look is improved without the over-riders and numberplate housing. I think I would look to fit a small US-type or motorcycle plate on a bracket underneath the bumper. Oh and just a word of warning - putting the old three-piece bumper back isn't a one-man job as you have to push in three directions at once, as well as wield the spanner. Thank goodness it has captive nuts. That's all I'm saying. Cheers Tim

Looks the dogs, tidy and refreshing, a nice cheaper alternative. I want one. Just the back to sort out now?

would a p6 bumper be a good alternative for the rear bumper on a P5.

The problem with the P6 bumper is that we see too much the front valance holes. Must be seen with a plate below. To be radical, I like the shape with no bumper at all, or minimalist ones on the brackets (with front valance holes blancked)

steve, thanks, it was of course your idea allan, not sure, i haven't thought as much about the back. If I can get one for a tenner, will try it out! Edit: had a look but the P6 rear item doesn't "wrap around" at the side. I am wondering about an XJ6 series I/II item, or course there is always the P5b one with over-riders removed.cyf, I will probably "blank off" the holes using short chrome coach bolts. I have seen cars with no bumper at all, but to my mind, visually that looks unbalanced, the bumper adds to the illusion of "lowness".

hey thanks for uploading us some shots .. interesting, its nearly there...the bumper looks like it could do with beefing up to really work...but I like no chunky numberplate housing

Beefing up ... not sure - I like it pretty well as it is. Looking at the two (p5 and p6) together on Saturday, the "profile" or cross-section looked to be very similar on both, the p5 one is bulked up by the centre section and over-riders but that's what I am trying to get away from.

Ha ha yes, seen those, surprisingly good value if they are as good as they say. They also cover some quite obscure cars - what, for example, is a "Ford OSI 20m 20 m TS 2.0 & 2.3"? I've never seen one of those.
I was amused to see that the Ferrari bumpers cost twice as much as those for ordinary cars. Clearly they cost twice as much to make, yeah right. Good to see that the shadow of communism had finally lifted and the free market holds sway!

A full set has been ordered by an officer of the club and will be reported on when he gets them.
