The truck i used to drive had 100,000 kilometer oil change intervals, i would not let it go that far if it were my truck!!

John I have just been reading through the posts and note that you change oil frequently but tend to use the cheapest available product. These are purely my views but, since you've decided to fit both a new cam and lifters I'd be looking to run it with an oil containing an additive package specifically including ZDDP. Newer oils aren't formulated for old style 'push-rod & lifter' engines anymore. As well, ensure the lifter bases are coated with a dob of high 'pinpoint' pressure grease. You don't want to damage the cam lobs on initial start-up! * Interestingly, a relative in Austria has a new turbocharged diesel VW Passat. Unbelievable...goes like a skinned cat...and the sound from the engine is nothing like a diesel! I asked him about service intervals. Get this...30,000 kms or 3 years...oil & filter. Yes, I took a look at the service book to verify this. Hi Vince the oil I use is good and cheap No24 on your list not the highest ZDDP The guy I am getting the cam from is very help full see below. Cam Break additive is recommended due to the reduction of zinc and other compounds from modern oils. When installing the cam you will also require new tappets, and best also check the timing chain and gear assembly. The cam needs to be "broken in " as this allows the cam lobes and tappet bases to work harden. Process is 15 - 20 minutes @ 1800 - 2000 rpm variable - if there are oil, coolant or fuel leaks engine must be stopped, fault rectified an dthe break in process continued. On NO account must the engine be allowed to idle or tick over.

Aw..... Takes me back to when i built my "brand new" engine, everything clean & nice. I had my SD1 Vitesse heads skimmed & i ported them myself, they are certainly the better head. All looks good John & i bet she's gonna zoom when you have finished. Big Kev. Sorry Kev missed your post Not worried about zooming Kev just torque and economy

Moving on a bit now been a bit slow due to a minor opp Fitting the new heads is now done I used new bolts and hardened washers I was surprised how some of the bolts were finished roughly under the heads so didn't fit very flat on the washers they are OEM! so I machined them flat. Preload takes a bit of time but well worth checking it is between 20 and 50 thou a bit of mig wire is 30 but I made two more gauges 20 and 50 to be sure all was what it should be. Moving on I will do some more pics showing the ss bits later but the tube under the manifold is now ss as well as the rear outlet plus all the studs a few more bit to do The front pulley is an old one used for timing TDC this was set by a DTI and turning the engine over. Still a lot to do I removed the old petrol pump (which is just pumped through) this afternoon blanked off the path with an aluminium bung (press fit and sealed) that would lead to the arm plus the tiny hole for the little pivot, machined both surfaces so they are flat! for sure they weren't machined the dome end as well the idea being to eliminate any need for thick gaskets pressure tested at 50psi all ok

Lovely work John. I really could eat my dinner off your engine. I should think you probably have the best restored P5b in the world

Just noticed this thread - your usual high standard to detail is noted - one advantage in leaving the engine in situ when front pulley is stubborn!

I had to take the sump off Phil and use a block of wood between the crank and the block this was the only way I could get the bolt undone did you get my email??

Heads done just the "B" Powder Coating gone back wrong colour plus wrong finish Loads of stuff now done in SS all the suspension coming off over the weekend! plenty to do Exhaust manifolds going off next week I suppose they will be a few weeks trying to get done before it's too "B" cold I can see the marks now The shaft showed little sign of wear I had a spare bit of SS so I made one anyway as it will be the last time the engine will be stripped I hope This took some bending even at cherry red heat 5mm 316 SS. Sorry about the finger mark Stan
