I want to introduce myself in this very nice forum.
I'm a Land Rover Series owner for more than 16 years now. One is a 1-ton 2.6l sixpott and I made a complete rebuild six years ago. So I got experienced in working on the very smooth Rover six cylinder engines. During the last years I was looking for a new project, a six cilinder off course. Because of getting older the new beast should be a little bit more comfortable and less noisy. In September I got the offer to purchase a very early P5 MKIII manual from 1965. It was located near the Netherland's border, 130 miles from my home town. We decided to have a look at the vehicle. My wife had a big smile in her face, so I had no chance...we purchased the P5.
The price was fair and the past owner was very honest and explained all problems he had on the vehicle: leaking rear axle, rear engine oil seal, wiper motor, a worn gear lever linkage, a few bushes on the front axle, 2 brake pipes, the bean can, the rheostat switch of the wiper motor, the indicator switch, boot seal, front screen seal, bad chrome on the rear bumper, a nice respray in admiralty blue (steel blue was the original color).
A lot of work to do. Than some bad luck! After the gearbox came off the vehicle I recognized two missing teeth on the flywheel ring gear The only no longer available part in that section! No used part available. So I decided to repair it with a few laser cut teeth. I milled a gap into the ring and asked a collegue to weld in the new teeth. I hope it's working a few years, before I find a good used unit. Most of the work is done now but i'm still waiting for the gear lever linkage and the carburettor. The plan is to register the Rover in March, just in time for the summer season.
Regards
Udo
