OK I should probably know, but what is the right way to check the automatic gearbox fluid levels, I do know where the dipstick is (he's the one with his head under the bonnet looking a bit confused) but I can never get a proper reading. Should the engine be running, in gear, hot cold.

If poss. take the car on a run to warm up the transmission oil. With the engine running and footbrake applied, I would select forward and reverse gears several times. Then I select Park and check the gearbox oil level with the engine running. If the oil is nice and pink, it is difficult to see on the dipstick and it may take several dips and wipes to establish just where the mark is. If the oil is dirty and smelly, its easier to see but it is a sign of a) neglect, b)burnt out /worn brake bands etc. This check is also covered in the owners handbook! Good Luck.

Peter,
The best way is to have the geabox oil at normal working temperature; usually means a run of about 5 miles to be sure. Remove the auto box dipstick and clean with a non-fluffy cloth (paper is best). Keeping the engine running at idle, select all options of the gear select and finally select park. Dip the dipstick with the engine running and gauge the level against the "hot" mark. Top up as required with the correct grade of auto transmission oil. Bear in mind that if a significant amount is required for topping up (1 litre or more), then allow for the fact that you are replenishing with "cold" oil which will expand when reaching working temperature. trusting this helps. :POf course not all dipsticks do have hot or cold marks so its best to check when it is fully hot which makes it even more difficult to see the level if the oil is clean.
An accepted method to avoid the splash is to remove the dipstick turn the engine off and immediately which means within 30 sec, isret and remove it.

One small point everyone has missed, make sure the car is on the level before doing any checks.
