Thanks David, love that kind of thing. I read a story a few years back now in a magazine called after the battle, it was about a spitfire that had been found on a beach in Calais, it had been untouched since it crash landed there in 1940, The time and tide finally gave it up again and it was a race to try to recover it. Unfortunately they pretty much destroyed it in the process, but the search was on to find who flew it and what happened. Due to the damage they almost failed, but luck was in, one of the machine guns had been replaced due to a fault and they found the serial number on that particular gun and traced the plane via that. It turned out that it was piloted by a polish airman, they managed to trace him but sadly he died only a short time before they found out he was the pilot, just before he died he told his sweetheart wife, I wonder what happened to my old plane, it was a hell of a story, and there was a lot more information found out about it that I cannot remember, They also found a German soldier who was stationed at that beach and he took a photo of himself posing by the crashed plane. If you get a chance and see that issue of after the battle ( the Calais spitfire ) I would recommend it.
