i have just tried to start my rover p5 mk 111 and it starts but will not run for long. i do not think the electrical system is working as all other electricals will not work ie wipers, lights and indicators e.t.c. does any one have an answer or something i could try?

Could be anything - you have to start from scratch to eliminate bad wiring/connexions/charging. You will need test instruments and and a circuit diagram and WSM

Tough one.
As Phil says it could be anything but the fact that it starts then dies suggest a bad earth at one of the major earthing points.
Start at the batter negative terminal and then check the earthing strap where it bolts to the body.
Check the earthing strap under the bonnet - offside front wing

Hi Edward welcome to the Forum As Phil and Alan point out it's a case of working your way through each item that has failed and for that you will at least need a wiring diagram! are you a member of the P5 Club?

One tip is to photo copy the electrics diagram from the WM or handbook to large scale. have you a meter with a 20v and ohm range, if not you can use a 12v bulb wired up.

It may be just points sticking in it - they are easy to overhaul - you will need 2 kits to retain the reserve pump. Wadhams has them

just found a cracking company does all fuel related work £ 180 for a new one, £30 for service set (per side) they took pump apart and cleaned points etc then put it back together and it started working. absolutley spot on. Just putting it back together and cleaned glass filter bowl but i now need a rubber seal for it, £2.25 off ebay sorted will try to start up as soon as it gets here. Thanks to all for tips/advice nice to know so many are willing to help. I don't think this will be my lasT time on here as the bodywork is next.
