I'm considering changing the polarity on my 1963 P5 from positive to negative, a subject that is well covered here. My specific question is about the fuel pump, which I had converted to solid state. I gather that its polarity, too, will have to be changed, but don't know if this is something I could do, or if I need to send it back to the guy who rebuilt it. Any thoughts or instructions?
Gordon.

Do not do electronics so I would say YES

An electronic fuel pump is the same as a standard pump except that the current through the coil is switched through a semi-conductor device, usually a FET. These only work one way round.
If you have two terminals on the end of the pump, AND neither of them is connected to ground (the body of the pump), check with a multimeter, then you can simply swap the leads to the two terminals.

Thanks for your responses. I've found that the cost of the polarity conversion is $25 (US) plus shipping, so I'll do that.

One thing a lot of owners forget about when changing the polarity is the clock.

Motometer on types winders are not polarity conscious

If you have an automatic, and there is a gear change inhibit switch and actuator, you may well cause a fire by switching polarity. The actuator has a diode to quench the back emf. The diode may well go short on switching polarity and set fire to your wiring loom. Mine did (no it was the PO who switched polarity not me).

All I am saying is make sure what clock you have, when I bought my P4 it did not have the correct clock did I know that at that time the short answer is no so a few weeks later at my first car rally I bought the correct clock for my P4 as soon as I wired it up it blew up why, well at some time the car had been converted from positive earth to negative earth so you live and learn.

Thanks for all the replies. It will only cost $25 plus shipping to have the polarity reversed, so I'll do that. Thanks for the tip about the clock. Mine's never work, so maybe this will wake it up!
