When I uncovered my car today in readiness for a "prom" tonight, the n/s door mirror came off in my hand! The pictures show the obvious problem in that the cheap and nasty mazac nub has broken where the spring attaches. These mirrors have been on the car since Sep 1980. I have the original bill and the Unipart number was 605627.I can't make out the makers name on the reverse of the mirror but it doesn't look like Desmo. The distance between the fixing holes is 109mm. Can anyone help with a replacement or an idea where I can get a similar type? Anyone have any idea if this was a mirror used on other cars? Thanks in advance.

The make may be Winguard. Is there enough metal left to drill and tap a small hole (M3 thread perhaps) and use a screw to replace the broken stud? Or possibly LOOK HERE (click) for a replacement

No idea why you put up with such a shoddy car Richard.
Perhaps you could source one that's been restored to a high standard and doesn't suffer from such mishaps.

The replacement is very different and I need to try and match up the drilled captive holes in the door. The mirror only has some indecipherable letters or figures on the back so I can't even identify the original make. All I do know is that it cost £8.20 plus VAT! The body of the mirror is SS I think and the arm and the bracket in horrible mazak which has pitted.

Not period or original though! My wife had one put on the door when she had her Mini Traveller "restored" in the late 1970's and the standard wing mirrors on the front wings were not replaced. She preferred the wing versions and when I re-restored it agaon in 1988 with more new wings I fitted the period Desmo's but the door mirror was left as there were holes in the door! Yours looks identical and although its not Desmo or Tex I cannot decipher the make. Lancaster Vintage at Morecambe do a good selection and the USA style apart from a round mirror may do The wings have now rusted at front end again where the arch liners I fitted do not cover but at least they can be repaired

My 1971 car never had any external mirrors fitted. I bought two mirror kits from Loxleys of Bromley Kent in 1980. Unipart 605627.Total cost about £20.The fitting instructions seemed to be designed for P5 doors as I recall precise measurements had to be made to clear any internals. I think my option will be repair otherwise a lot of hassle to cover up the holes in the door. Whilst I am critical of the Mazak, they have been on the car for 35 years and the mirror and backing are almost as new.

Yes - I agree and ours are probably Unipart too. Wing/door mirrors were not of course compulsory (and rarely standard) outside on cars then - continentals often had door mirrors. Commercials were required to have them and Mini was registered new in that tax class.
I have seen them on Ebay in past so keep a look out but surely it can be fixed by extending/stretching the spring to use the screw fixing the base? Or even use a stainless self tapper through the new hole?

All sorted but what a terrible piece of design! The spring is way way too strong for the lug but it has to be because the arm and the heavy mirror have to be held tight against the bracket because there's no grip apart from friction. I decided against repairing the lug because no repair would hold that beast of a spring. I tired various springs but nothing I had would do the job of holding the arm firmly even stretched to the bracket hole and bigger springs wouldn't fit within the bracket body. In the end, I drilled into the arm where it pokes through into the bracket hollow and secured the arm with a self-tapper. I could do with some replacements but most stuff available has a much shorter base bracket so the existing holes would have to be dealt with.

Glad its sorted for now but is the design really that bad - 35 years ?
Modern cars self destruct after 15 years!

Glad its sorted for now but is the design really that bad - 35 years ? Modern cars self destruct after 15 years! Fair point and as I said, the mirror (S/S) back and the mirror itself is good. I suppose I was meaning that it could have been better designed so as not to have needed such a strong spring and a better way of making the mirror stay in the same position but, as you say, 35 years (34 to be precise) is good going and the drivers side is ok ATM. Thanks for your help.

Is this any good? Ebay item 221494445107 Thanks, I'd already seen that one which, I think, has a shorter base so wouldn't line up with the existing holes. Fortunately, I managed to repair the old one so that will do at the moment.

It looks OK but is used and old so may go same way as yours and the base may not cover your holes. It is on the pricey side as well
