I have a slight puzzle here. My 3 litre appears in most respects to be pretty much untouched in the way of mods or repairs. Holding the washer bottle in place however was a canvas strap, secured by a nickel plated buckle. Our local club member whose opinion can usually be relied upon swears blind that there is no way this strap would be original as they were made of rubber. Assuming he is right, can anyone else shed light on what appears to be an interesting historical artifact. In picture of the cleaned up and replated buckle you can see PAT. MAY 5,1903. I assume this means there was a patent applied for in that year. Indeed, a Google search comes up with what looks like a patent application to the US patent office for strap mounted buckle that is quite similar. My guess then is that a previous owner used an old WW1 army tie down to secure his washer bottle.

P4's and P5's used the Lucas rubber strap as did other car manufacturers - the canvas version is far superior and less prone to perishing

Thanks, but in the end I used a length of nylon webbing rivetted in place and minus the buckle.
