To Wallingford and back today ca 90 mi each way in bright sunshine. Speedo reading 65 - needle wobbly Revs 2500 then wild swing over to 3500 then 0 - hard taps on dial face correct it. Oil pressure plum centre - Normal Ammeter - just charging ;D Water temperature - gauge (or sender?) died en route Fuel - tank emptying faster than a pint of Wadsworth 6X on a hot Spring evening Clock - stuck at 6.15 Driver's face - split by ridiculously wide grin ;D Slightly spoilt by stalling in car park then refusing to restart. Went off to meet my accountant then lunch with a mate - came back and, of course, brrmmm!!! Any thoughts on this last one guys? Pretty much what I experienced a couple of months back. Not related to hot start I think 'cos was perfectly happy restarting after fiilling up with 60 miles done. Now running on new points/condenser system, new ballast resistor coil, fuel pump wired separately to ignition, been using her two to three times a week for a couple of weeks now..

Andy............Dont assume that because the water temp gauge doesn't work it is faulty. Could be that there is no water to make it register...............
Which could also cause localised overheating, making the mixture lean, which makes it easier to stall AND difficult to restart.
Probably not the problem at all, but do check the coolant level !

Cheers Adrian - I know it's a teething problem but v frustrating just the same! A Hi Andy, usually one of two things that are affected by heat: Fuel vaporisation = unlikely high resistance connection (assuming that the engine is turning over normally)- try tweaking up the connections to the starter motor and cleaning up the battery terminals a s a starting point.

Happiness is....... the new engine with 20% more power running sweetly. Idling for 20 minutes without the temp gauge moving from normal, oil pressure at N when at idle and top of scale at higher revs (high capacity oil pump & newly rebuilt modern block) and new alternator (Bosch) putting out enough charge to power the whole house

...getting the hang of just driving these fantastic cars. Going into/out of a roundabout with a bit of anticipation/corrective steering you can control body-roll and maintain progress. Kickdown and leave that pesky BMW Z3 in the rear-view mirror (yes, I know I have a thing about being overtaken by Beemers - just wish they wouldn't pull out the moment you get to a dual carriageway ). Waiting at lights and having a guy lean over in his 4x4 and say "Lovely car, very smart - I used to have one!"
