Folks,
I believe the manual mentions the use of some sealant/lubricant for the head bolts on the V8. Is this actually necessary? If so, is this still available? If not, what is a suitable substitute? Regards to all.

Yes there is a sealerfor the bolts and it is necessary if you want to be able to remove the bolts again if required in the future. I've got a 1litre tin of the recommended sealer I've had for years but I'm not sure if it's still available. Try your local Land Rover dealer they should be able to point you in the right direction, they're still working on the 3.9 engines. The last V8 I dismantled had at some stage been assembled without the sealer and it pulled out about 4 threads with the bolts and snapped one bolt in the block.

Harvey, Many thanks for the information. I'll make sure to use it and contact my local agent.

For info purposes, when you are re-bolting the heads, modern thinking is not to torque up the outer row of bolts on the heads, or if you feel you should then a max of 20lbft.
When I was looking at rebuilding my original engine both RPI and V8 Developments advised me of the above.
Subsequently I opted for a rebuilt Chimaera 4.0 block with 3.9 pistons from V8 Developments and it was supplied minus the outer row of bolts.
I also have a Chimaera and guess what....no outer row of bolts.
Current wisdom is that torqueing up the outer row of bolts distorts the heads.

Thanks again for the info. I had read this on many threads and had planned to put the bolts in and just pinch up.

Does this mean if we remove these bolts from our engines we reduce the risk of head gasket failure?

Taking them out will increase the risk if failure as the gasket has already been pinched. Wait till you fit a new one. I dont think that failure was ever an issue, just that it was pointless fitting them in the first place as there were no corresponding ones on the inner row. They were never tightened the same as the rest anyway.
