I've been trying to work out why the headlamp flasher on the steering column hasn't been working. I started at the switch end as this seemed the most likely culprit. I'd done some repair work on the horn switch recently and thought this may have been a factor.
The headlights themselves work on main beam and on the dip swich. There is also power either side of fuse 3/4
On checking the black plastic holder (for the indicator and headlamp flasher wires) I found the following colour wires.
Upper left: Brown/white. Lower left: Blue/White. This is the area the flasher plunger contacts, no power from either contact when ign on although should I expect one of them to be a live feed?.
Upper right: Red/White. Centre Right: Blue/Green. Lower right: Green/White ( Power to inner wire when Ign on switches l/r indicators.
When I try to bridge the green and white wire to either of the flasher 'contacts' nothing occurs. So it appears I have no power to the flasher switch and a break in the circuit on the way to the headlight!
Does the feed for the flasher actually run from the starter switch to be and is the flasher switch actually an unumbered switch on the diagram?
Thanks,
Andy

Having just re-checked the wiring diagram and found 2 switches numbered 79, I think I may have just answered my own question!!!

Yes you have and the wiring diagram is correct and is the "normal" Rover way - there are others errors though

Thanks Phil,
I've had a look under the dash. I found the blue/brown wire to terminate in a x shaped rubber block (5 holes)and no blue brown wire coming out to bypass the floor switch and on to fuse 11/12.
I seem to have found the brown/white wire that provides the power to the flasher switch. This lights up a testing lamp with the ignition off. However, when the ignition is switched on,the lamp goes out!! I'm not sure if this is a wrong connection at the ignition switch or just because the battery has drained.
I'm going to have a proper sort out underneath the dash and make sure every connector is cleaned and identified. I'm also going to replace the indicator stalk/horn contact assembly as it seems to be too worn to be reliable.

There is a bunch of connectors under the dash around the column - your problem looks to be here

There is a bunch of connectors under the dash around the column - your problem looks to be here Thanks Phil, There's a couple of single bullet connectors under there as well as the group of five but I think these belong to the headlamp on/off switch itself. Unfortunately the cloth wiring to be various shades of brown!!! I'm just going to remove/replace each connection one at a time and make a note of what stops working until I've eliminated all chance of confusion!! I've traced the loom from the floor switch through the parcel shelf on its way to the headlamps. I was hoping to find a connector leaving the loom here to meet up with the wire from the flasher switch but, unless its been tucked out of sight there's no trace of it! I would imagine it would be fairly easy to run a by pass wire back down to the connection at the floor pedal?
