I took myself and the Rover over to John Wallett yesterday. We were hoping to exchange the dizzy for electronic ignition but I had an early type distributor and the change over was not compatible. It was certainly worth looking at though as my dizzy was basically knackered as there was excessive play/movement in the shaft. On hard acceleration the sound of pinking was very much evident but when John replaced it with a spare recon dizzy the fault disappeared. We also had a look at a couple of oil leaks that had appeared before my journey to him. One was the dysfunctional petrol pump (i have an electric pump now) and the other was ATF fluid from the base of the reservoir. Easy to get sorted. John set the timing for me and adjusted the tick over and she was now running sweet as a nut. The only problem was I have this knocking noise that has been there for a while and it now seemed worse the when idler adjustment was slightly lowered on the carbs. I thought It was bottom end trouble, but it was not making a hard or metallic sound. To cut a long story short it was the Diaphragm in the old fuel pump. As fuel was not passing through it I suppose it had dried out over time and was making this strange noise. The pump was removed and the pump arm was cut off. Result, quiet as a mouse! We also took the car down to an associate of John's and used his car ramp to raise the car and DINITROL all the underside. Many thanks John for your help. I learned a lot, especially that Lynne makes a decent bacon roll!!
