BW35 box in my '69 P5B coupe is not the best and needs work or replacing. However, I've had an offer of a vg ZF 4 speed autobox from a 3.5 V8 engined Sherpa (police) van. I believe these ZF's do fit but I'm wondering has any member done this and what are the points to watch out for e.g. prop shaft length, clearances, mounting mods, etc. Any help to understand whats involved would be very grateful before I tackle the job. Happy Christmas to all member's. Martin (Dublin)

Fitted a four speed ZF 'box from an ex. Met police LDV Sherpa twelve seater riot bus to my '70 Saloon about five years ago. Well worth the effort. Fourth is like an overdrive (the 'box changes up from 3rd to 4th at between 45-48mph) and instead of a one-to-one ratio, gives 0.726:1. In real terms, this means that on 185s, instead of 19.9mph per 1,000rpm, you get over 26mph per 1,000rpm. BW35 at 70mph and the engine'll be turning at around 3,550rpm. The ZF gives just 2,600rpm at 70mph. I also popped a 4 litre V8 in at the same time, and on a motorway run, the car is a couple of miles per gallon MORE economical than a standard P5B. Prop shaft has to be shortened by 88mm. You'll need the bottom half of the Sherpa speedo cable (fitting to gearbox) and then get 'Speedy Cables' to make you up a new one to fit the 'box and speedometer.. Try and acqwuire the inhibitor switch wiring connector (no terminals on outside of box; four wires just disappear inside the casing through a grommet). You'll need a new ATF filler / dipstick tube as the Sherpa one is a very odd affair that rises from the o/s of the gearbox, but finishes at the front of the n/s rocker cover! I bought a gearbox oil cooler from a Range Rover and fitted it behind the front valance (which I cobbled together from a P5B, a P6B and a Rover 800 grille). Best of luck!

Me, again.... Forgot to mention / answer one of the original questions. I had 88mm or about three and a half inches chopped out of the prop-shaft. Then had it re-balanced. It didn't even occur to me to check that the front flange on the P5B's prop-shaft matched the size and hole pattern of the ZF's rear flange before I had it cut and welded up again. Fortunately (on the 'box I have) they did match. You'll have to cut the mounting bracket on the P5B's sub-frame, rear cross member off and fabricate a new mounting behind the cross member for the ZF. I used parts of the P5B's rubber mounting and a laser-cut piece of quarter inch plate.
