Hi, I have a MK I, 1961, with a electronic 123-ignition fitted. I have not driven much with the car since I own it. After driving a while the engine is misfiring and I suspect that something is wrong with the electronic ignition. Therefore i am checkingthe wiring, connections and settings. I have already fitted Silicon cables. Now I wanted to check the proper firing order. Strange enough I don't find this in the workshop manual! Can anyone tell me the firing order starting at the TDC? I have read the thread about the cables and the problems of overheating of the coil. Could it be problem that the coil has not the correct resistance? The car is fitted with an AC Alternator and changed to negative earth. Suggestions welcome! Thanks Frans

Hi Phil, Thanks for the answer. Being a Rover P5 bloody beginner, may I ask this question: in the workshop manual is noted that the distributor rotates in clockwise direction. Therefore, if the firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4 and looking from top on the distributor cap the wires should be connected staring at 1 going clockwise 5-3-6-2-4, right? If I look on the top of my distributor cap the wires are connected in clockwise direction 1-4-2-6-3-5 (as delivered from the shop who fitted the electronic ignition)!!! What is correct??? The engine runs, but once in a while the firing is irregularly and the engine bounces! Your advice appreciated! Frans

The distributor rotates anticlockwise on 3 Litres - Clockwise on 3.5 Litres

I am preparing to check and adjust the ignition timing. For this I need the TDC timing marks on the flywheel, which are behind a cover on the flywheel housing. Can anyone tell me where to look for this cover? Is it accessible from the top or from underneath the car (in which case I would need a pit or so)? Frans

Looking from FRONT of the car its on the left side of top of the bellhousing near the bulkhead. It hard to see - loosen the 7/16" AF nuts only and swing aside

John, Many thanks for the answer. Even though I owned a p5 1960 46 years ago I never worked on one before. Now I own a p5 1961 and slowly need to find my around. This explains my many basic questions! Thanks! Frans
