It is because its not opening fully - the hinges may be too stiff or part seized.
Adjustment may help as well

In the first picture it appears the spring is connected to somekind of bracket arrangement, maybe it's sited too high up forcing the bonnet to be in the wrong position to stay up ? Not a part i often look at to be honest.
Big Kev.

Mine does the same...I just assumed that the springs that hold the bonnet up are tired! There's certainly nothing that's seized or binding.

The back strut across the bonnet norvin how far is it away from the bonnet it's self this sometimes gets weakened and pulls away so you compensate on the brackets to get the bonnet fitting correct so the springs don't have the same effect?

Mine does the same...I just assumed that the springs that hold the bonnet up are tired! There's certainly nothing that's seized or binding. Mine too. It feels as though it teeters on the brink of closing when it is fully up. Also, when closed it sits slightly rear high at the rear edge, but if you press down on it there, it stays down at the rear until it's opened and closed again.

Mine settles if you push it too. It actually touches the top of the heater box, doesn't have any problems staying open though.

I do not want to fiddle with it or adjust it too much as I had a bit of a gap between the right hand wing and bonnet and it is still not quite right.

Ok guys...does anyone have a solution to the bonnet issue (seems to be 2 issues now...either not closing correctly or not staying open under its own weight.

Vince how far from the bonnet skin is the rear brace (the one the hinge is on) either side where the weld is and it bends towards the bonnet? also when you push the bonnet open more does that brace pull away from the bonnet?

Is the underbonnet blanket the original. Mine isn't, its a home made one and a lot heavier than original which is why my bonnet struggles to stay open.

John I can see what you mean about the brace I will check mine but do not think that is the trouble with mine, it is a bit of a brain twister and it seems a lot owners have a problem with bonnets.

In my experience both problems are caused by poor adjustment often after body work ie wings or perhaps partially seized hinges causing buckling which cannot be corrected without different hinges and/or bonnet. East Midland's Rep comment is also most valid.
It may be springs but try different ones

The biggest cause is hinges that are stiff so you put strain on the rear brace and pull it away from the bonnet so you adjust the bonnet to fit after you free off the hinges but the brace is not where it should be nor are the hinges or springs

I have now been and had a look at the brace under the bonnet that the hinges are bolted onto, it looks ok there is a very small gap at the front just enough to push the blanket beneath, but that gap looks normal to me.

Ok norvin it's worth a check hard to explain this! where the brace is welded either side does the brace fit more or less tight on the bonnet for shall we say 4"? forget about the middle for now, my bonnet is tight against the garage wall wrapped up otherwise I would take a picture

I will check this next time I am in the garage, but if you mean 4" from the edge going towards the middle then no I do not think it is. I have a spare bonnet up in the roof if I can get to it will check that as it is new and has never been fitted on a car.

I have checked the gap between the brace and the bonnet on my car, the gap is just enough to push the blanket under, I have checked the gap on the new bonnet which is up in the roof and has never been on a car, in the centre of the brace the gap between the brace and bonnet is enough to push my hand in, so is this anything to do with the bonnet not staying up. JUST ENOUGH ROOM TO PUSH THE BLANKET UNDER. MY NEW BONNET UP IN THE ROOF,SORRY BUT CAN NOT GET A PHOTO OF THE BRACE.

Looks from what I can see norvin pretty dam good if you measure in from the front edge where it is welded to the bonnet 100mm the gap between the brace edge and the bonnet inner should be near enough 20mm.

If the brace is ok it can only be too much weight or springs? the bonnet only just about stays up when all is ok so it will not take a lot for it to close on it's own
