Hi all I am in the process of trying to refit my bonnet(good second hand replacement) the hinges don't seem to want to lie flat,the spring lifts the rear of the bonnet when closed.Are there any special tweaks I need todo to get it to fit...it fits nice( with one eye closed the other squinting) with the spring removed... thanks for any advice..

The hinge bolts have to be just nipped up enough to allow downwards movement when closed and you just push down on the rear edge and carefully lift up the bonnett and tighten up. There is a very wide range of adjustment so its just trial and error to get it sitting right

What seems to happen is the hinges go 'over centre' and the springs push it up a bit when closed.Taking the springs off means the bonnet closes well but obviously wont stay open!.Trial and error though does seem to win in the end.

Another cause is slight bending or distortion of the steel pressing to which the hinges bolt on the under side of the bonnet panel. This can occur when the bonnet has been left open, and up, for extended periods.
Somewhere there is a post by John Wallett describing how to measure and check for this. It was several years ago I think.

thanks all, I was hoping there was a magic fix, the bonnet being distorted somehow does seem to fit. That spring does lift it a good cm though when fitted I will check the hinges in more detail as well but don't think my issue is there..the trials of an old rover eh ..
just checked the bonnet where the hinges bolt on there is quite abit of air behind the bolt support and skin... looks like a block of wood and pressure needed...could be fun and found a new rich vein of tin worm behind the hinge disgusted as p38...the previous rebuild was made of the stuff

thanks warwick, some interesting stuff there im not overly sure if my replacement was coupe or not now but I have a feeling it was off a saloon, I did manage to get a closer fit with some help from a lump hammer and a block of wood on a rubber mat and yup I have the problems with gaps on my replacement wings as well but if I can get it anywhere kevbacons in the pics I will be happy

Check that the bonnet isn't actually sitting on top of the heater when closed,they are quite close as standard. Mine fitted better after I loosened the bolts and pushed the wing upwards,I also used a very heavy rubber mallet to 'encourage' it.Go steady though,too much gusto left me with a crack in the paintwork on one wing.
