all sorted now with the help and advice you gave me and to be honest help from my mechanic mate, now every stud and nut is loose. he said when i get the brass nuts he will change the manifold and front pipe for me to make the exhaust a full stainless system what i need now is brass nuts once i sort out what size the studs threads are then i can get long brass nuts for the two end studs from the block to manifold and the three studs manifold to down pipe flanges, and five standard size brass nuts for the larger studs from the block

That is a little cryptic even for you Phil. It's not so difficult. All you have to do is Google what Phil said, and you find this tinyurl.com/gqeufxw at the top of the list.

I use a 3/8" SP 6 point socket with short wobble bar extension. You may be able to crack it or get a very sharp small cold chisel on the side of the nut to split/spread it. Heat is the best bet though. I use a long brass nut on the front and rear 5/16" UNF studs and also on the 3 down pipe ones But I will recheck when its daylight in case they are 1/4" UNF studs (so need 1/4 UNF nuts). The other larger ones should be replaced with steel ones but run a die nut down the studs or replace them

i have now got long brass nuts on there way i also see you recommend the five larger nuts be replaced with steel nuts. i also got new studs and nuts etc: from john wearing after reading one of your other posts saying the studs/nuts for p4 and p5 are the same. as i also got a new set of steel nuts/washers with the manifold, would it be beneficial to double nut the five larger studs to keep the studs getting corroded and giving the same removal problems in the future, i must say i liked the link to the guitars with brass nuts posts as a pensioner it's a long time since i had anything to do with g-strings

Double nuts will help but check threads on the nuts/studs as early P4's were BSF but JW is a LR partsman so he probably supplied the correct UNF studs as they use them too
