I have a P5 and the steering box is leaking out the bottom. I understand this is far too common. I am going to attempt to repair this on my on, sending it out for repair is not an option at this time. I do have a question. Is there a circlip that holds the quad seal in place, or is it necessary to disassemble the steering box, and remove the shaft, to replace the quad seal? Thanks for any replies.

The seal in question is a quad seal this is held in place by a flat washer which is held in place by a circlip.
You may get the old seal out and replace it without having to lift the shaft but that will mean squashing the seal to get it in "not good" :-(
The correct way would be to lift the shaft when the spool is removed, there is a bit of upward play when the top plate is removed! it may be enough?
Either way, the box will leak after a short while!
If you PM me I will send you a Quad seal free just the cost of postage.

Changing and adjusting the drive belt shouldn't or won't make any difference to the system.
Issues can occur if: 1. The pump pulley is loose. The small woodruff key will chew away at the keyway spline and cause erratic operation.
2. You've never replaced the filter in the pump reservoir or physically cleaned it or replaced the fluid.
3. The pressure and return hoses may be damaged internally, eg., clogged or restricted.
4. Someone (?), has hamfistedly attempted to adjust the screw and nut on top of the hydrosteer box without any technical knowledge as to it's function.
5. Other related parts comprising the steering system and front suspension are compromised, seized or worn out. For example, the idler arm and pivot opposite the pitman arm maybe seized if it has never been serviced.
6. Considering the age of the car and it's components. Nothing lasts forever without knowledgeable and routine service work.
* Take the time and carefully read and revue the 3 pages of this topic to learn and evaluate possible issues with the hydrosteer power steering system. There is a complete technical article on page 2.

Input shaft seal blowing out. My hydrosteer box has now been rebuilt twice in a relatively short interval, and of course still leaks. There is a slight variation on what has gone before in that mine blows out of the case the seal around the input shaft (the one connected to the steering column). This first happened when I decided to reduce the leakage from what looks like a breather hole in the top cap (close to the peg adjusting nut) by tapping it and inserting a 2mm grub screw. A few weeks later, the input shaft seal was partly out and leaking. so I knocked it back in, removed the grub screw, and put up with the leakage. The box went back to the third party for a further rebuild while the engine was out for its rebuild. There was a slight graunchiness in the box which was later attributed to a disintegrated ball bearing. The box was returned to me with the "breather" hole plugged again, and presumably a new set of balls and seals. It has lasted a few thousand miles before the input shaft seal blew out again. Has anyone encountered similar before? and if so, what did they do about it?

Hi David, if the rebuilder has failed to properly refurbish your hydrosteer box on two occasions then why not send it to someone who has some real expertise with these power steering systems and fully understands the design and the fixes required. AFAIK there's only one person in the UK and the other in OZ Victoria. Eddie (below) is an absolute expert in refurbishing these boxes and has a workshop specifically designed with tooling and test machines for this purpose. He rebuilt my box in 2007 and it's still working perfectly to this day. The box and pump he rebuilt for Mike Hancock (Winston) is one of the best hydrosteer boxes I have ever tested in a P5. He also modifies the pump with his current rebuilds adding an additional pressure blow off line. It all works exceptionally well. roverp5.proboards.com/thread/12161/eddies-hydrosteer-rebuild

Hi Enigmas, Yes I am certainly heading in that direction! It usually helps though to have some idea of the problem first.

Hi Vince
Another club member is having steering box fun. I discussed my journey with his mechanic tonight and think I have scared him sufficiently into throwing the towel into a box with the Hydrosteer box and shipping it to your guy in Victoria.
The only reference I can find is Scoresby Victoria and a phone number. Do you have an address or email for Eddie?
Somewhat surprisingly, mine is still pretty good with the replacement x ring.
I also changed to Valvoline 20w/50 XLD classic just to see whether my old favorite brand would burn differently different to the Penrite Classic 20w60 and my oil consumption seems to have halved. We did 300 reasonably hard miles yesterday, two good hill sections, the Pahiatua track and the Remutakas for about a pint burnt so perhaps there is still life in the old engine yet.
Cheers
Martin

Hi Martin, Here are my contact details for Eddie (Hydrosteer Rebuilder) Eddie (Edward Jedrys) Automotive Engineer. 12 Orson St, Scoresby. 3179. Vic.
Mob. 0412048209
Below is a comprehensive link to his work. The fully rebuilt system shown was fitted to Mike Hancock's P5B Sedan (Winston) It is one of the best systems that I've ever experienced in a P5. No freeplay, no notchiness. Eddie is a hydrosteer rebuilder guru in my opinion. It just doesn't get any better. roverp5.proboards.com/thread/12161/eddies-hydrosteer-rebuild

Thanks Vince, I will pass this on. When I next get into the ring with mine, should I get knocked out again, I will also use his services!
