Mine is very presentable under the bonnet, although I would like to make some further improvements over time(Life, get,A !) Can anyone direct me to,or post themselves a pic of a concours engine bay please? I have a feeling that my air-filter housing is painted in the "wrong" colour,it's smart enough but looks like silver smoothrite to me,what should it be originally? And what manufacturers decals should be under the bonnet and where are reproductions available from? Thankyou Martin

Hi Martin here is a picture of mine it has moved on since this one but mine I don't think it is any where near Concourse I will take some more pictures later with the air filter and decals etc etc. As far as I know the Air Filter was plated it wasn't painted, mine I have sprayed with a good look alike metallic paint but I will be replacing it with a plated one if I can find one without dents s88.photobucket.com/albums/k163/johnwp5bcoupe/?action=view¤t=P1010144.jpg

Very nice - except the Servo should be the cadium plated finish as should the fluid can. I am fairly certain the air filters were silver painted (those on the P6 being black) I have some of original types which are damaged somewhere so I will look out and inspect. The guard is missing off the alternator belt!
I am pleased to see you have the red regualtor box rather that the later black one - where is the coil - loom ballasted ones where high up on the n/s wing near the back. Having said that I have seen two of same age one with it lower down but without ballast and one high up - perhaps on assembly different fitters placed them fifferntly. This is certainly the case with the stick on labels
Wadhams sell the 2? Coolant, Negative earth, paint labels I think

Thankyou guys Great picture, much appreciated. In comparison, mines as good..will post pics soon. Question....should the fusebox have a cover? It seems a bit exposed to the elements as it is,but doesn't look as though a cover was original equipment. Is there an aftermarket cover,or are things fine as they are? Had a good day with the P5 today ;D Took it along to see a mate, who is an MG/Jaguar restorer. He has a hyper-critical eye for classic cars. He pronounced mine fit as a fiddle A couple of small blemishes at the bottom of doors, which he has offered to sort and then pump her full of waxoyl. I made contact with the previous owner yesterday too,who confirmed the car to be in no need of anything apart from a slight weep on the steering rack, which he assured me they all do! I have been digging in to the history today, and for the first 12 years of her life she was the managing directors car of Manganese Bronze, the taxi manufacturer...so any info about them would be interesting. How off-topic am I? Sorry ;D

How off-topic am I?Not at all, frankly! In no particular order.. there should be a fuse box cover, (and a very nice one it is as well but it only covers the fuses not the connectors. It is on johnwp5bcoupe' photo, but it isn't jumping out at you like most modern ones. If you are missing yours, PM me I should have one kicking around. Manganese Bronze were a Dennis Poore company I THINK.. so there may be some Triumph motorcycle tie up as well:- your car has History! You car wears it's miles very well As I have whinged about elsewhere, my favourite one has 43,000 odd genuine and looks centuries older than everyone elses' on this list...

Never heard of the old slinky fetishist ;D
No reaction fom any one one the PC forum about the P5 being the worlds most practical classic yet I see. I must find the article sometime..
BTW, an alarm wouldn't be a bad idea, for the same reason Matt needs one on his new Granada... The banger boys LOVE P5's

Yes Phil I agree the servo should be Cadium plated as well as the fluid can (plastic one wouldn't be correct for a 69) these will be part of my running restoration when I get there, not so sure about the painted air filter though the one I have in etch primer at the moment was just plated.

Does this answer the questions about the air cleaner and rocker cover / inlet elbows colour? Note the highlighted ribs on the rocker covers. Clearly a B & W image but the air cleaner is not plated, it's painted silver! Freddy

Hard to tell from that Freddy cant see any difference between the carb pots and the air cleaner on the picture! I have the same picture in the P5b brochure I still think they were plated because when you get an untouched one the rust is all over not just in patches as if it had been painted someone I am sure will know

I would doubt if they were plated, it just wouldn't look right would it?

If they were plated at all they would have been Silver Cadmium Plate or Zinc Plate. I would go for the latter on a cost basis as AC Delco wouldn't spend a fortune on a bent piece of thin tin. This would explain the effect that rust tended to cover the whole item in time. Not only that I would not have thought it would have been cost effective to spray paint them all. So the answer is to find someone who can zinc plate it which gives a silver finish or spray paint it in silver.

Interesting to note that the alternator guard that Phil mentioned in his earlier post, is missing in the picture as well.

Was the alternator guard an introduction on later models? If you are going for engine detailing why not go the whole hog . This was taken at last year's National.

All my P5's bar 1 an early 68 had the guard so perhaps it was a later addtion - my 70 model/69 bulit saloon was the next earliest.
As I mentioned the P6 air filters were painted black presumably by AC - I do not recall even rusting on any of mine but until I locate them cannot be sure - certainly a silver finish eg tin plate? rather than the "golden" cadmium look is nearest so far. The rocker cover fins/stripes were unpainted but not sure whether this lasted throughout production.
The picture is almost certinly a pre-production engine anyway as it has the Old start bracket on the left side of the cover but not the little Terry clips on the filter. The ol filter is also the larger P6 type.
It seems its yey another of the well known Rover inconsistencies that seem to crop up as such concours judging does not necessarily go to strict dates

Early P6 V8's had silverish coloured air filter, later cars had black. P6B & P5B had the same oil filter, the housing was just angled in a different direction. The alternator guard is well worth having, it's all too easy to rest your elbow on the alternator with the engine running with painful results. It is an early engine in the picture, it has the early oil filler cap, and early engine mounting brackets, and early cooling fan yet it's not fitted with an AED.

Thankyou guys for your replies and pictures. Mine is a sort of matt silver ,which I thought stuck out like a sore thumb ,but seems to be how things were. It looks like silver smoothrite, brush painted though so when I have nothing left to do on the car(yeah...right!) ,I might rub it down and get busy with a rattle-can ;D
