Well a bit more done today I made up a new Kickdown Cable easier to take the old one out than fit the new one I need smaller hands the cost of making a new cable £1.75 and a bit of time Filled up the gearbox with new oil as the old stuff was still clean I will use that for the PS so it will not be wasted! Dave Cole came over and gave me a hand to fit the bonnet! thanks Dave Final carb set up will have to wait for my Colour Tune to arrive

John I can not believe you made a kickdown cable for £1-75, Harry fitted a new one when he repaired my box and that was £42 yes forty two pounds.

I just had the first run since the rebuild very pleased to be back in the driving seat The only problem is the tracking is a bit out pulls to the right apart from that it purrs like a kitten and pulls like a train no pinking on 95 cr*p fuel

Yes it was Andy the engine felt a lot more responsive where I want it most I will dive underneath this morning and do a nut and bolt check/turn the locking tabs, then off to a local garage friend to get the tracking sorted it will be "borrow my spanner and you adjust it in case I mark something" he will shout and I will adjust

I still have the locking tabs to do the dreaded winter lergie got me but the steering is done I should I hope get back on the job tomorrow? The car seems a lot smoother on pickup to me and it's the first time on kickdown it has never pinked on cr*p fuel so that's a result and despite lowering the CR the car is far more responsive I am taking the car Tuesday to a guy who is a SU specialist with a rolling road so it will be tweaked for performance and economy I will photograph the session for the mag and may do a clip for Youtube that will be a first

John how did you lower the CR ? did you fit the thicker gaskets to the heads. Hi norvin yes I used a composite gasket takes it down by minimum 0.6-1

I had a 2 hour session with a tuner with on a Rolling Road today in his very early 70's been there done that with SU's "VERY educational" and worth the money I am sure it will be returned in using less fuel! I did the carbs with a Gunston Air Flow Meter and a Colourtune which got it near enough I had supposed but I was amazed how far it was out the car is much more responsive and really pulls well "who's up for a guess at the bhp at the wheels at 4k rpm?" I set the limit a 4k I saw no reason to go any higher. The timing is now 12 degrees BTDC and no signs of pinking at all on Cr*p fuel this was the setting for maximum power I may back it off to 9 degrees if it is hesitant on starting as I would only loose a very small amount of bhp where I need it most Knocked the timing back to 8 degrees BTDC she didn't want to start cold may back it further to 6 BTDC after a chat with Harvey I don't need maximum power anyway reliability is more important

John as you can see I had one of those, I thought it was rubbish, the little plastic thing used to stick so it gave a false reading. How did the guy set your carbs up not with a rubber hose.

I used the flexible pipe off my Hoover to set mine up.....

Sorry but I can not think a pipe will work on twin carbs, and unless you have them checked out by some kind of air flow device you will never know how accurate you have set them.

I know where you are coming from norvin when I backed off the timing and had to adjust the slow run, before I did out of curiosity I stuck the flow meter on the carbs and they were almost identical I suppose 40+ years of experience counts. As no body wanted to have a guess At 8 degrees BTDC At 12 degrees BTDC an extra 5bhp so now set back to 8 BTDC Just a bit of fun www.youtube.com/channel/UCYk6fAfCE1vyNQgX3MInMsg/videos

I am not surprised that the "old timer" can use his ear so well.
Even after 40 years of acoustic shock the guys I work with could tell you the frequency and loss/variation of a measured tone. You cant buy that kind of experience.
How will it run on continental fuel?

I knew a guy years ago who had been doing swimming pool installation and service for years. Within the range of about 18 to 28 degrees C, he could tell water temperature to within a degree by sticking his finger in it.

I still think for most it is better to use some sort of device, or it's like taking a photo or image on a camera without a light meter.

I had a great run out today the car runs "very smooth" on 95oct loads of mid range grunt so I am pleased with the result and well worth all the work Now back on my other project see members forum
